Jeremy - What Makes This Song Great?

Excellent in-depth breakdown of Jeremy by musician/producer/instructor Rick Beato.  I had no idea this song was as complex as it is.  This guy seriously knows his shit!

Was anyone else aware there was a cello in the song?  I sure didn't. Enjoy!

The opening bass has popped every crowd that has ever heard it. Hands down an all-time classic.

Great song obviously, but I had started taking it for granted.  The song hit me again when Chris died last year (won't get into it here) and then seeing EV do it with strings in Dublin last summer...I was bawling.

    It really is special.

Awesome to see the song completely broken down like that. Still a great song. Makes me want to break out Ten on my drive home today :rock_on:

First PJ song I ever heard (when MTV had the video on constant rotation in '92).
There is a live version that I love where Jeff's bass sounds pretty evil- there is some kind of effect on it and the intro is a bit more drawn out than usual... I think it may have been on a SA tour. Anyway, this was my gateway song, so I love it for that reason!
  • I thought the last few tours, from ‘13-‘16 anyway they played Jeremy amazingly well. Some of my favorites are from this period.  Just tight and a great buildup, not sloppy like some years.
I'm like an opening band for your mom.

Jeffs bass is the No 1 reason for sure.

    Agreed!

I also think it's nostalgia and memories that makes the song so great. Jeremy was the first song I ever heard by Pearl Jam, which is a statement in line with so many, no matter when you got into the band. Hearing it live always makes me think of that first time I heard that song, which hooked me on this band, and has given me so many great memories.

I completely agree with this...also that Bass line in the outro and the Harmonics too...I really enjoy playing it on the Bass...although it took me ages to figure out what Jeff was doing eventually figured out what Jeff was doing :)

This song popped up on the phone on my commute to work this morning.  I never tire of it, and remember the first time I heard it.  It remains an all time favorite, not just of this band, but any band.  From about the 3:40 mark onward it still gives me the gdamn chills every time I hear it.  what a band
