not sure if this was said yet because i haven't finished reading all the replies...

to me the "she dreams in color, she dreams in red" lyric imparts the notion of the want (need) for a life that is more complete/full (in color as opposed to black and white)...a life in which love (often represented by the color red) has a place.

so, she dreams of a more meaningful life that is filled with love...which she doesn't have with "him."

This is like the most famous song Ed's ever written, and he's talked a lot about what it means...it's pretty obvious if you think about his past. It's about his mother not wanting to split up with Ed's stepfather because she's too afraid to do it even though he's an asshole. Betterman was one of Ed's first songs, but never made it to an album until Vitalogy.

    I thought everyone knew that.

I also dream in color with music...never thought it was all that rare.

okay, well...i don't think anyone's debating the meaning of the whole song...the debate seems to me to be about what specifically the lyric "she dreams in color, she dreams in red" means...well, okay. :)

The line "She dreams in color. She dreams in red" in my opinion refers to a climatic experience such as a Greek Catharsis. At the moment of catharsis, oppisites come together. Blood is shed. The individual experiences a moment of empathy or enlightenment. I think that in her dreams, this girl realizes stuff. She dreams of something better.

  • I agree with Darkstar, that when dreaming "in colour" it reminds me of that movie Pleasantville, where everyone is black and white until they see how good life can be in colour. She wants to live in colour.
And red symbolises the love she longs for.
