Harvard researchers Daniel Hemenway and Matthew Miller examined 26 developed countries, and checked whether gun ownership correlated with murder rates. They found that "a highly significant positive correlation between total homicide rates and both proxies for gun availability." They also didn't find much evidence that a higher rate of gun murders led to lower rates of other kinds of murder (i.e., stabbings).

interesting article, and since it pointed out an overall decrease in murder rates, I wonder how that correlates with the US drop in gun ownership rates since the 1970s (% households with guns, not # guns per capita).

I ran across this 2013 NY Times article indicating that younger Americans are not buying as many guns as in previous decades and they suggest that military service (involving fewer % of Americans now than pre-1970s) has served as a kind of gateway for gun ownership. So maybe there's hope.

Because its getting worse everywhere if its not war with guns its civilians killing with guns or with knives or with objects or with fists, or then theres something else, pollution, or rape or fraud or some kind of dishonesty every corner you look, its all crazy I tell you and debating about it is just as bad

and these 6-13 year olds have phenomenal impulse control... so no worries.
JWPearl - what's so bad about debating gun reform? Granted, guns are just one of many, many, societal issues, but isn't it worse just to give up or not care?

Yes but debates turn into arguments sometimes so I rather avoid them..unless someone is completely insane in their views and need a head examination..then all I can say is beware, I see a dispute with me coming lol.

Debates can stay just that - discussions - and some arguments can be constructive. How is anyone to learn or share of themselves if not by exchanging ideas?

Don't you question people, situations, laws?

Wouldn't you want others to do the same?

Avoidance unless others are over the top (assuming I read you correctly)?

I don't know...I'd rather speak out, speak honestly, than keep silent out of fear of someone getting their feathers a little ruffled or trying to pluck mine.

As to the children in the article (so young)...if they're going to be in homes where there ARE weapons, I'd hope they learn (from within or outside the home) to respect its potential, to know how to handle it safely so there are less "hey, look what I found, what happens if I --- BANG" occurrences. And obviously, keep that shit secure and away from them.

    From the article -

Death and Taxes reported in January of 2013 that at least five American men have shot off their penises since 2010.

I know I shouldn't laugh, but something about that strikes me as hilarious.

The bullet came from the house next door, where 62-year-old Charles Edward Shisler picked up a .9 mm pistol by the trigger, causing it to discharge. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found Shisler standing on his porch, although he initially was “belligerent” and uncooperative.

“The damn gun doesn’t usually shoot,” said Shisler, according to his arrest report. “You have to squeeze the hell out of the trigger to shoot it.”

Picks it up by the trigger.

If his account is even accurate... why? Why pick the gun up by the trigger? What rush of shit to the brain makes some idiot pick his gun up by the trigger while its loaded?

How many times did this fucking slack-jawed yokel argue against gun reform while some reasonably intelligent person stood there shaking their head in disbelief?

"Aww shucks. It ain't ever fired before when I dun went and done that! It ain't ma fault. Daisy never fires lessen ya really tug on that there trigger."

Murder charges. Why not? Why excuse stupidity when it has cost some guy his life? Why must society continually make excuses for idiocy? "Look you dumb fuck... you were playing John Wayne spinning your six shooter on your finger on your porch while brushing your tooth and you shot and killed some guy who was trying to walk into his house."

    Let's stop fighting evolution:

I’m not saying let’s go kill all the stupid people… I’m just saying let’s remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out. (some reasonable person)

If we are going to rule out people from owning guns based on their intelligence (I am for, although I can't take away their right to defend themselves), then we'd better do the same for voting. I'm for that too.

The kicker here? In 2-3 weeks, he's going to jump on-line and argue as a 'responsible gun owner' against gun reform.

The gun grab has begun and the FEMA camps have opened and are being occupied. Black helicopters are circling and men in black are descending ropes. The post office purchased millions of rounds of ammunition, local law enforcement has purchased armored vehicles and an executive order banning Congress has been issued................................................................................

    Peace.
