It was Ed who gave me the best gift though. They went straight into Sad, and Ed likes to change the lyrics
Ed does not like to change the lyrics, ed sucks at remembering lyrics so he makes em up as he goes along..Given To Fly

I'm hoping that they play this bad boy all throughout the '06 tour. That will so kick ass!!!"Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."

and someone else mentioned (in another thread, i think) that the band hasn't even perfected it live yet. i agree with that. just the way they hadn't perfected green disease live until the canada tour. i think this song is only getting stronger in concert the more they play it.

Why couldn't they have put it on Binaural and released it as a single. This is a song you wish everyone could hear. At least I think so.I miss igotid880

Man, to me, I never really gave this one a chance until I read this thread. Then I was driving and the tears just started flowing, pretty much everytime he says sad. Thing is, no one in my life died or left, but i's the compassion. So amazing how much they feel and can transmit through music.
I don't think Ed forgets lyrics. Occasionally he stuffs up, but I don't think he does it on purpose. I love how he sings Glorified G about a Pelican

Inspired by Pearl Jam's, "Sad" and Tina Modotti's "Workers, Mexico."
He walks up a plank weighed down by concrete
formed for a, "livable community."
New welts surface where he once was caressed.
Sweat rivulets flow from under his hat,
but is this revealed in the photograph?
Where concrete blocks are dropped is not his choice.
His scraped knuckles leave indelible marks.
Real estate brokers will hide what life costs.
The foreman throws disparaging remarks,
and drinks water too expensive to share.
This worker is deluged by acerbic air.
If only we lived dry-eyed as concrete,
and not be bothered with caress or choice,
and not be bothered with a human thirst.
Tina Modotti's photograph is of two Mexican workers carrying a block of concrete up a plank to a ship. I can't find it on the internet or else I would post the link here. It's incredible. I was looking at it, and listening to "Sad" at the same time, and they seem to fit a bit. There is no such thing as leftover pizza. There is now pizza and later pizza. - anonymous

Ok I was watching the AOL sessions today and I had the lyrics in front of me. Yes, shame on me, I don't know them by heart. Trying to change that.
Anyways that song hit me like a TON of bricks again today. WOW.
I got all misty eyed.
What a beautiful song.
I think my fave lyric is "if just one wish could bring her back...its sad"
Cause its something any of us who have lost someone really close to us has thought at one time or another."Rock and roll is something that can't be quantified, sometimes it's not even something you hear, but FEEL!" - Bob Lefsetz0 -
Playing Sad in Portland this summer is what really got me into the song. Always liked it but never loved it some much. Ed said he was thinking of Sleater-Kinney when he wrote it and thats why its good.#FHP0
