...is my favorite one!
For me that song talks about the world that we have inside and sometimes the others aren't able to see it.and suddenly we became alone...
what does it mean to you?

i'll do what i want, but irresponsibly
it's evolution baby...."
the drums in the beginning, the intensity building up - seems like a very personal song..
it only makes today worse.
Up here in my tree, yea!
As she slams the door in his drunken face
And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
I think it is about more than just fame.
It is (in part) about maturing (they say knowledge is a tree/it's growing up just like me) which is really just reclaiming your innocence, going back to yourself at your simplest form.
You have to be humbled before you can do this. You go above everything, and put youself above everything and everyone else, but it actually humbles you, because you are forces to see things bigger than yourself, or anything else.
The two verses are a bit of a before and after thing, I think.
That's the best interpretation I can give right now.

they don't seem to notice me, no
all their eyes trained on the street,
sidewalk cigarettes and scenes
"Love cannot save you from your
fate."
<Jim Morrison>
And thats a great interpretation If I may say, concur
Kids hide in trees in play, when we play we're acting a child-like manner. It's very much about growing up. I've always interpreted the 'tree' as being some sort of mental sanctuary, were you can go to escape the struggles of everyday life. Be a kid again and not have to worry about the world's problems. Eddie links knowledge, to growing older. Only one man could get away with "They say knowledge is a tree", silly, but brilliant at the same time.
The dream-like guitar style fit in with the words beautifully.
It's a great song. Great music and great words.
and regaining privacy ,modesty and his sense of self.
"Newspapers matter not to me, no more crowbars to my head"
He wants to get as far away as possible but keeps getting pulled back
"eddie's found a home oh at last the trees fall"
He gets away to his "tree" to remember what he is all about and take what isnt tainted or created by the media or public
"i'm so high i hold just one breath here within my chest"
"had my eyes peeled both wide open, and i got a glimpse
of my innocence, got back my inner sense ,baby got it, still got it"
He is just remembering and preserving what he is truly all about .
Bottom line i guess is maybe Ed got too famous and didnt recognize himself anymore like his freinds mentioned in the song. So his tree is how he becomes Ed again and not the lead singer of Pearl Jam.
I have a question tho.. What are Ed and Jeff singing in that bridge? Hell, sometimes Ed just barks and thats awesome too
~ is your Pearl Jam cup half empty, or 1/2 Full?
but memories...they eat me
I've seen it all before,...
bring it on cause I'm no victim.
