in All Encompassing Trip
OK need some help.  My husband and I are going to San Francisco for 4 days around early June.  We kind of want to do some touristy stuff, like Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and Pier 39.  We are not sure which "district" to stay in.  Can any one help?  Also we plan to rent a car to drive to muir woods for 1 day so we'd like to be close to a car rental place and shuttle to and from airport.  Any help would be great thanks!!

    We always stay in Union Square when we go and haven't been disappointed yet. We just use Uber to and from the airport and around town though.

    Question is union station close enough to walk to pier 39? Or trolley?

    Union Square to Pier 39 is a bit of a walk but I've done it round trip a number of times.   Pretty sure at one time or another I've covered just about every part of that town on foot.  S.F. is a great city to walk around in!

    you can walk almost anywhere in SF......even when drunk :wink:

    you may already be to late for alcatraz.

    anywhere 5-6 blocks off union square in any direction is OK, altho market street is pretty sketchy.
