No Way question

Okay, I'm deeply in love with this song, but there's something that's been haunting and bothering me since the first time I heard this beauty.

When Ed sings: 'I'm not trying to make a difference, I'll stop trying to make a difference... no way', does he mean I'm done with trying to change people, the world, anything, I don't care as long as I have someone who is here for me (just want someone to be there for.. someone to be there for me). With no way emphasizing just that.

Or is it more in a manner of saying you don't want to bother anymore, while the 'no way' means: who am I kidding here, I'll never stop trying to make a difference and you and I know it! Who am I trying to fool? I'll always try to make a difference.

Or am I totally delusional to begin with??

  • It depends how you interpret it. A lot of people will have different views, but that's the beauty of it.
I deeply love this song as well and see it the same way you mentioned (first suggestion) but don't worry about the opinions of other people, just enjoy the song in yourself.

    True.

Funny though, I lean more towards my second suggestion. He or she (not particularly Eddie, but the 'person' in the song) is saying he'll stop trying, but he knows it's just not in his nature not to try and make a difference: in the world, in someones life, ...

or it could also be clear statement where he goes: Me? Stop trying to make a difference? You kidding me? No fucking way!

Oh well, the song has a great vibe and groove :D
  • but I think the meaning is different from the 2 you mentioned.

To me it means he doesn't care anymore. He's begging for someone to be there for him. That's the only thing that matters. He needs someone to love/ love him. Especially when you turn the lyrics around.

    Who's calling an angel?

I'm not trying to make a difference.
I'll stop trying to make a difference.

I just need someone to be there for me.

This might be completly off from what Eddie meant, but as said so many times before, the real meaning a song has is the meaning you give it. This is the meaning I'm giving this song right now, but when I'm totally happy and have found the love of life etc etc I might think something completely different. This is just to illustrate how your situation affects the way you look at songs.

I've always had the same question. Is the 'no way' [art of the chorus a continuation of the previous lines or is it a separate "are you kidding? not a chance!" statement?
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
  • I think it's the first one, but I also think it's supposed to be slightly sarcastic and fecisious...

there is no real answer, it's whatever you think it is

  • That's true. Sometimes lyrics do have a certain meaning. But others are very open ended, and cause discussions such as this. Hey, it makes a buck.
