red mosquito

such a good song

watched from the window, with a red mosquito
i was not allowed to leave the room
i saw the sun go down, and now it's coming up
somewhere in the time between
i was bitten, must have been the devil
he was just paying me...
a little visit, reminding me of his presence
letting me know, he's a-waiting... oh
red man's your neighbor, call it behavior
while you're climbing up slippery hills
two steps ahead of him, punctures in your neck
hovering just above your bed
hovering just above your bed
i was bitten, must have been the devil
he was just paying me...
a little visit, reminding me of his presence
and letting me know, he's a'waiting, he's a'waiting...
up there... yeah
if i had known then what i know now...
if i had known then what i know now...
if i had known then what i know now...
if i had known then what i know now...

    I agree..that is a great song!:D

That line is what gets me through the rough times, and everytime I hear that song, I sing that line b/c man, I know I have made bad choices in my life.

I was hoping they would play it in Little Rock, but didn't, but man, that was a shocker when they played it at MSG 2...talk about NO CODE love that night;)

    Just giving my 2 cents.:)

Yeah I know. I was just as surprised as everyone else around me. I remember the guy next to me telling his friend, that it was Red Mosquito, and I was OMG state of shock.

I called my sis, Jaya from there, b/c, well NO CODE love baby!

That, I have to say, is one of my favorite songs off of that album.

So, was Eddie actually hospitalized for food poisoning?

  • Red Mosquito is one of those songs that always seemed so random to me ever since I first heard it. But that is why I love it. It is amazing. Of all songs, this is the song that I got my younger cousin hooked on that has made him a huge PJ fan as well Saw it live in Albany this year and it was probably the best version I have ever heard. I though my cousin was going to jump through the roof of Pepsi Arena when he hear those first few notes.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

Thats what I heard also... It was a show in SF where he had to go off stage because he had a food poisoning. Neil Young jumped in to get the band through it. I think its written in 5 against 1.

Ed had to stay in the hospital room for at least 12 hours (sun go down... and now its coming up). A red mosquito was in there as well and buged him all the time...
So plenty of time to get to thinking...

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

i totally agree with you! oh man, the song itself has great lyrics, but the chorus always gets me, a very clever way to put into words a feeling i'm sure most of us have had at some point in our lives!

one of their most "original sounding" rockers. awesome fucking song with lyrics to boot

i don't know what it is, but something in the music reminds of of another old time favorite of mine - Satan's Bed.

There's a funny story about Red Mosquito. Ed is talking about it during SF3 '06 (I think it's this one).
Mike McCready used a zippo lighter belonging to Ed during the recording of this track. In fact, this was a gift from Ed's grandfather.
Mike asked if he could have it and Ed answered ... No !!!
Then he goes like "you should probably have it though" or something like this.
Anyway great tune to hear live !

great song, on an album full of great songs.

    Except Lukin.

    That sucks donkeys.
  • Hope to hear it live one day, great song from a mind blowing album
  • we all know the album No Code is full of riddles and secrets. Red Mosquito contains yet another. At the start of the studio version Stone says "Giant on line one. Ninety-five." I am yet to crack this riddle. For the life of me i cant get what it is leading to...

awesome amazing song, but i always wondered about it, was it really about food poisoing? was it drugs maybe, an overdose, a visit from the devil, he's awaiting? if i had known then, what i know now......?

am i reading too much into the lyrics?

Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • This was one of the highlights of my first show.

Red Mosquito live is so phenomenal. I love the studio version, but live takes this song to another stratosphere!
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

    play it again!!
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

U know? I like this song, but... i really don't understand the lyrics. If they are so simple as they seems... i really can't grasp it.
