A pretty, sweet, lovely tune, this one would so nice to hear live once again, although the odds of that happening are slim to none.

OK guys....I know it has been a few days since I posted a Song Of The Day Thread....the reason being is that I have misplaced the disk with No Code and Yield...my biggest fear is that it is floating around the local middle school right now....("Mom, I took some 'blank' disks to school"!!)
I knew I should have labeled them!!!
Anyway, I have a few left that I did not post, so I will start with 'Angel'...

like an ANGEL
this is an incredible and beautiful song....
angel (1993 X-mas single)
Like an angel, fly over your house
Like an angel, pass out wishes
Like an angel, I will move the arrow
Like an angel, I live alone
I'm not livin' what was promised
I am close but can't enjoy
Oh, I'm not dyin'
Oh, I'm so tortured, 'cause I see all
Tortured, and all I cannot do
Tortured, all I should have done
Tortured, while I occupied a man
I'm not livin' what was promised
I am far from glorified
Oh, I'm not dyin'
Oh, I'm not alone
Mine is not a celestial state with idle hymns of praise
Time is short, I have an appointment at noon, at noon in Hell
Across the waste of space and fields of air I glide, alone at night
Oh please, please think of me, 'cause I'm, I'm by your side
I'm by your side, I'm by your side, oh...
I'm...I'm right in front of you...I'm by your side...

Re: like an ANGEL
I know I might get flamed over this comment, but I just don't really like this song. Ed's voice sounds good, but the song just doesn't really mocve me like the majority of Pearl Jam songs do. I have this song on a CD called "No Fuckin Messiah" that I got from a friend (no idea where he got it). Also on the CD is I Gotta Feeling which rocks. Also on the CD is the live version of I won't Back Down. Ed's voice on that song has never sounded better. The way he sings it puts Tom Petty to shame. It gives me goosebumps.

I flame no one your entitled to your opinion as for mine first heard this lovely tune late one night when I was listening to a college radio staion SOU the dj who was a huge PJ fan had said the previous time that she had just gotten a vinyl copy from the fan club and she was bringing it in on her next shift well I waited all of 20 minutes with my tape recorder on and her playing all PJ when she played it I was blown away on first listen by not only Eddie's voice but the halting lyrics and serene sound that it gave me a chill.
Any time they use unplugged guitars it is always a plus for me.

OK, this is my song......
....I love this song....It's truly wonderful! It has captured the angelic quality that's very difficult to capture.....
.......No one would get flamed here for not liking a song! Hopefully those days are over, so don't you worry!
........I've written about this tune on the old board and on the new board once, last week I think?
........This tune is based on a Caprice(Poem) by Sir William Watson, and was written in 1892. The caprice is called The Eloping angels, and you can find the entire poem in Synergy under music...just click on 1993 Lyrics inspired by The Eloping angels. I don't know how long that has been there, but I think Kat deserves a Thank You for posting the entire caprice.....Fire up your printers and copy it....It is a VERY rare book, No one even has it listed as even existing. I originally heard about it reading an article about angels. After having a Near Death Experience, one tends to focus a little more heavily on these Divine Beings('cause that's what they are!)
...Went to my local library and they got a copy through Inter-Library loan for me, a beautiful old book from Gettysburg! I fell in love with it when I read it....Now, I KNEW I would never find a copy of it, so I copied it in a blank book in Calligraphy and returned the little jewel back to the library.
Now, in the meantime, a friend lent me a bootleg tape to copy...'angel' was on it, I'm flitting around listening to it, and Lines from the poem are being quoted word for word....I stopped dead in my tracks.....I was just like, "Holy Shit"......I rewound it, grabbed my calligraphy book and found the passages. I had just spent ALOT of time re-writing it, so I really knew the words very well.
People I know travel alot, so there was this mini-quest going on...no-one could find it. The people I work for were able to find the book from a rare bookdealer, and a few people went in on it and presented it to me as my Christmas present.....I cried.
.......I have one of 75 copies ever printed, 50 had been for sale to the public.
It's printed on Japanese Vellum, and this Fall I'm going to have a box built for it....archivally sound so it doesn't get destroyed.......I hope I'm not boring you all, but the quest, finding out about 'angel' and realising it was based on this poem was truly wonderful/weird!
I've had this book for about 3 1/2 years now. But the whole process of reading about the little book, inter-library loan, writing it, 'angel' the tune, and recieving my very own copy, took about 3 years...at least. This is long...I'm truly sorry guys, but this one is amazing to me!
....Just another thing about this fantastic band that makes me.
Love your Pal....brokenarrow>

Re: like an ANGEL
Dave A actually plays guitar on angel. I was told he wrote the music to angel while he was moving from Dallas to Seattle (I know he wrote the music. Whether he wrote it on his way to Seattle is another thing). I'm pretty certain Ed wrote the lyrics but I can't 100% confirm that.

Push me, pull me....oh pull me out.....
...da...da....da....da..........Push Me Pull Me......
(Just gotta finish that tune every time!)
It is a cool story, I don't think I would send it to the Ten Club though...
they'll just think I'm some Lunatic! I feel good sharing it here on the board though, I guess because we have a little community thing going on here!
JDE-PJ asked me about my near-death experience...maybe someday I'll post it for you all, but I'm not quite ready to...It's pretty involved, and I have to be Up for it.....It's a pretty hard thing to talk about, but one of these days, I'll share it with you! You all are wonderful! brokenarrow>
Another thing I'm always questing for, are old interesting editions of 'The Three Musketeers' by Alexandre Dumas......I just love this book...read it if you haven't allready....

Re: SOTD: ....ANGEL
few songs ever hit me the first time i hear them. "black" was the first song to ever do that, "angel" is the second. i remember pulling it out of the packaging when it arrived from the ten club... placing it on the turn table, dropping the needle down... and tears... tears... tears...
something about this song just tears me apart so horribly... someone mentioned how it captures that angelic sound... and i think that's part of it. the lyrics are staggering. i found out about "the eloping angels" not long after i recieved the single... a friend had a copy of a copy and was nice enough to copy it for me. i fell in love with the story just like i did with the song.
and thank you for sharing your story with us broken... that is so amazing... what a lucky person you are!
i've finally turned my boyfriend into a pearl jam fan, and this was one of the songs that converted him... we quote lines of the song to each other constantly... last night he played me "angel" on the guitar and sang it to me... and once again... tears, tears, tears.

"Like an angel, I remove the arrow"
or is it,
"Like an angel, I will move the arrow"...?
My ears hear, "remove the arrow".
But I'll admit that I don't understand what the "arrow" represents, so whether it's 'moved' vs 'removed' could help me to understand...maybe. On the other hand, Vedder so often purposefully jumbles his words so that we can interpret it how we want to; you know, make it our own. Love that about him!
