And the Rivers Shall Open for the Righteous Someday...

So I've been listening to I Am a Patriot NON-STOP all day today. I listened to it on the way to vote, I listened to it on the way home, I listened to it at the gym when I was working out, I listened to it waiting for McCain's resignation speach, I am listening to it now, waiting for Obama to address Grant Park. It's such a fucking beautiful song, and so applicable to today and every election for that matter.

I listened to it in 2004 ALL NIGHT LONG. And I watched it go from a song of jubilation as early projections slated Kerry, to sadness and frustration towards the end. I went to sleep at 6 AM in 2004, when Tom Brokaw said that nothing will happen in the next few hours, and that he was going to bed and he suggested we do the same.

But this year, it's SO MUCH DIFFERENT. This year, we're watching concesion speaches, and waiting for Obama. This year, I'm so fucking happy I could cry, for a good reason. This year, GIVES US HOPE!

So from bad to good, Patriot is forever burned in my mind.

THANKS STEVE VAN ZANDT, THANKS PEARL JAM

This song is branded in my mind forever, for bad and for good, and for every election to come.....

And just in case you don't remember the God Damn lyrics....

And the rivers shall open for the righteous (X2)
And the rivers shall open for
the righteous,someday

I went walking,with my brother
And he wondered,oh,how I am
Said what I believe with my soul
Ain't what I see with my eyes
And there's no turning back this time

I am a patriot,and I love my country
Because my country is all I know
I wanna be with my family
People who understand me
I got no place else to go...
I am a patriot...

I went walking,with my girlfriend
She looked so fine, I said,"Baby, what's on your mind?"
She said,"I wanna run like the lions
Released from their cages
Released from the rages burning
in my soul tonight"
I am a patriot...

And I ain't no communist
And I ain't no socialist
And I ain't no capitalist
And I ain't no imperialist
And I ain't no democrat
I sure ain't no republican either
I only know one party, and that is freedom
I am,I am,I am...

I am a patriot,and I love my country
Because my country is all I know

And the rivers shall open for the righteous (X2)
And the rivers shall open for
the righteous,someday
Someday,someday,someday...
I won't change direction, and I won't change my mind - E.V.

Good on ya, I'm happy for you.
    Great song, great result.
I've got a Gibson without a case, but I can't get that even tanned look on my face...
  • It's fucking done, it's long done. What matters though, is the future. Let's do something about it God Damn It! Let's make every chance that PJ takes the stage for a good cause feel like YEAR or every election year.

All I can say is, do what you can do. No matter how big or how small.

"Seek my part, my small self, like the many on a shelf, sometimes I know, sometimes I don't, sometimes I cringe sometimes, I dont, dear God...."

    heh. close enough. lol
  • I also have been listening to this song a lot lately. It is a beautiful song. The lyrics are so appropriate for this time in our history. I was fortunate enough to hear this song live in Lexington, KY in 03. What an experience!!!

    Thats just crazy!
I went for an MRI yesterday and took my newly purchased copy of Lexinton, KY with me. Never heard that boot before yesterday, but was stoked to see it had Patiot on it.

Turned it up a little louder when that came on...

Cruisin down I-80 in my wifes Volvo singing what is so fitting of a song, driving home to enjoy my bottle of wine and watch the returns. Yeah, I'll remember this election day...

So hating America is patriotic? Could we please move all of this political sucking of Obama's teet to the Moving Train? Just because not all of us were blinded to Obama's fairy tales doesn't mean we should have to hear all this gloating. This is a forum to discuss Pearl Jam not Obama.

  • The Irvine version is forever burned into my brain. And it sounded especially good this morning, partly because I have not listened to it in over a year or more..

    Thanks for the direction.

I first heard this song on the 8/29/00 boot from Boston. When I finally got around to seeing them live for the first time on 9/29/04, Ed played this song as a pre-opener. I almost shit when he played the opening chords. I also have the boot now so I can listen whenever I want.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

Hating America and being critical of those who run it are two very different things. Easy there, tiger.
