This Vitalogy tune orginally named Already in Love when played in Atlanta in 94 was brought out of retirement one late night in May this year, and made for one of the most memorable moments of their tour.

song of the day....SATAN'S BED

Satan'S BED

It's not all been said...been said and done...
I've never slept in Satan's bed
Although I must admit...still visits my place
Uninvited, as you know, he don't wait
Funny how he always seems to fit in
Funny how I always want to give in
Sundays, Fridays, Tuesdays, Thursday, the same
Sometimes the special guest, he don't like to leave
Already...in love... (3x)
Already...

Who made, who made up, made up the myth
That we were born to be covered in bliss?
Who set the standard, born to be rich?
Such fine examples, skinny little bitch
Model, role model, roll some models in blood
Get some flesh to stick, so they look like us
I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club
I'd stop and talk, but I'm already in love

Already...in love... (3x)
Already...

In love...Ah ha ha ha...
...follows torture...follows reward... (2x)
Oh, oh my butt...

Never shook Satan's hand, look see for yourself
You'd know it if I had, that shit don't come off
I'll rise and fall, let me take credit for both
Jump off a cliff, don't need your help so back off
I'll never suck Satan's dick...
Again, you'd see it, you know, right round the lips
I'll wait for an angel, but I won't hold my breath
'Magine they're busy, think I'm doing okay...
Already...in love... (6x)
Already...

Didn't Stone write the lyrics for this? Or did I dream that? I meant to check the booklet last night but I forgot.

Short and sweet interp: about resisting temptation and how nobody is any better than anyone else.

Awhile back I was browsing through a biography of U2 and there was a section about U2 hanging with and playing with Pearl Jam in Rome (I might be confusing this with a passage from the Cameron Crowe article in Rolling Stone). I think it was the Zooropa tour. U2 had all these celebrity types and super models back stage and there is a passage in the book (or CC's article) which talks about Ed's discomfort when surrounded by these "special" people. I always took the line "model, role model, role some models in blood . . ." and the lines that follow as a direct reaction to this alienating situation: Ed, always trying to stay grounded, being fawned over by beautiful, famous people. In typical Ed fashion, he responds angrily to the surreal spectacle.

obviously that's about him rejecting groupies. he's been with his wife Beth for like 15 years or something ( " already.. in love!")

" I can only be as good as you let me..."

Re: Not your average love song!

Just wow. I taped this from the Private Radio in April 94 before Vitalogy came out. I love the live version.

This is my favorite song on "Vitalogy"! GOD, I WISH THEY WOULD START PLAYING THIS SONG LIVE AGAIN! It has a hard-hitting message, but presents it in a fun way, and it also just plain rocks!

I think it is about both Ed's/the band's rejection of easy groupies (although it admits to temptation - "Funny how I always want to give in"), and denoucing of "the beautiful people" and elitist mindsets, as well as further criticism of the media. ("Who made up the myths . . . set the standard?")

And you just can't beat the opening of the sound of a whip cracking and that silly "coo, coo, choo" noise. Love this song!

I've always thought of this as like a weird, weird love song. I mean, it makes sense (in my little head, anyway)... shaking Satan's hand is like commiting a sin... (in this case adultery) which is something Ed will never do. He's spoken a lot about having a lot of people "in love" with him to a point where it's hard to handle... and the problem with it is he doesn't WANT any of these people, 'cause he's "already in love." So I kind of take it to be a message, kind of like "Not For You" is a message to all those people who think they're "bigger than the music"... so this one is maybe for people who think they're bigger than Beth :)

Also, there's that cute little picture below the lyrics in Vitalogy... gotta love that one...

Already In Love

From the time when Ed said hey were going to play a new song until now, a great song with blazing guitar work, and for the person who wrote about the Rolling Stone article yes I believe that is what this song is about!

I know someday you will have a beautiful life

Hum RrVw, you must have copied this one soon after it made its appearance on the board, still love the orginal version of this, when it was still known as Already In Love, think as I get ready to go out, I will take and listen to that great show from 94!

I wonder if Satan has recovered over the shabby treatment he recieved from Sadam, that is the ?, only Kenny knows the answer!

I know someday you will have a beautiful life

Re: SOTD: ...SATANS BED

a year and half later, time to extrapolate

boy - i never do make myself clear huh?

anyway, when i said resentment i meant towards those who think they
can entice/seduce you in anyway for any reason

i always see that as a attempt to cheapen your feelings about someone/something, an attempt
to erode your moral instincts

so i guess i meant resentment against the temptress/temptation

"well i hate to ask, but are friends electric?"

It's great taking in all your interpretations - what creative and lateral thinkers you all are! Whatever the song means, it's just plain, fucking great!!

  • Yeah, well, apparently Ed has had a change of heart about glamour pusses.

    Don't get me started...
