Song of the day(Faithfull)!!!!
Time for the second song off of Yield, this one should be a good one for all of you to join in, so enjoy and have fun.
FAITHFULL
plaque on the wall says that no one's slept here
it's rare to come upon a bridge that has not been around or been stepped on
whatever the notion we laced in our prayers
the man upstairs is used to all of this noise
i'm through with screaming
and echoes... that nobody hears
it goes
it goes
it goes
like echoes... that nobody hears
it goes
it goes
it goes
like...
we're faithful...
we all believe, we all believe it
we're faithful...
oh we all believe, we all believe it
we're faithful...
we all believe, we all believe it
and echoes... that nobody hears
it goes
we're faithful...
we all believe, we all believe it
so faithful...
oh we all believe, we all believe it
m.y.t.h is belief in the game
controls that keeps us in a box of fear
we never listen
voice inside, so drowned out
drowned you are, you are
you are a furry thing
and everything is you
me you, you me
it's all related
what's a boy, to do
just be a darling
and i will be too
faithful
to you
I know someday you will have a beautiful life

I wonder...
what a neat song. I love the way the guitars open it up - so gentle...
Gosh, for meaning I could only say how it applies to me.
Noone's slept here, it's rare to come upon... virginity? How it makes 'em mad, though, enough to love someone so much, to find out they've been "had", but you can't change it, so be through with the screaming that nobody hears.
Myth is belief, belief is myth... interesting twist on words - belief keeps us controlled and in fear of perhaps, sinning? But again, what's done is done and perhaps all we have are the mortal promises between us, down here on earth.
I am a furry thing... that line always makes me smile. I saw it on a website as: "you are, you are everything..." and I thought I'd just made up the furry thing part to suit my own taste , but then checked the liner notes and sighed with relief.:) whatagreatband!
Thanks Jason,

Re: Song of the day(Faithfull)!!!!
Ahhhh, finally. This is one of my favorites from my favorite album and it inspired my current sig. Before I really really listened to it, I thought it was about organized religion because of the references to the man upstairs and prayers. But I guess most people seem to believe it's about relationships and the trust involved. I'm not completely sure what to believe. I actually think about this song frequently because it's hard for me to really get a handle on what it is about. However, maybe it's about both organized religion and relationships, along with other status quo things. As in that all these notions that people just assume are correct and valid should be examined closer, but they aren't because we're all faithful and we accept these difficulties in life as givens instead of questioning them. But, honestly, I don't have a clue as to what it really means and I've never heard anyone else's interpretation that I fully agreed with.

"we never listen, voice inside so drowned out"
Among the many poignant PJ lines, this one truly makes you think...because our heart is always talking to us and telling us what we need to hear, but sometimes we block out that voice, or just can't hear it because of all the commotion around us. But the heart will not be silent, and it will keep speaking to us, if we'd only listen.

Re: Song of the day(Faithfull)!!!!
To me, it's a very sardonic take on religion ... all of 'em.
It seems the world is just full of all sorts of different faiths (faithfull?) from christians to jews to budhists to satanists to snakehandlers ... and they can't all be right. Most of them, ed notes, are just "echoes that nobody hears." It's so bad that even "the man upstairs is used to all of this noise."
So how to we know which one is the truth? Mostly, we just stick with the one we we're raised with, do what we're told, and the "voice inside's so drowned out." it's sad, really.
but, the cool part about this song, is that it ends with a solution. Since there's really no way of knowing which religion in the truth, all we can do is "just be darling, and I will be too, faithful to you."
Just be faithful, and kind, and gentle and loving to one another, since that's pretty much the only thing all religions have in common.
Damn I love the imagery and insightfulness of that song.

Re: Song of the day(Faithfull)!!!!
Some great interps on this thread...and Dimwad, I really like what you had to say...overall, that's how I see this song too.......
Just a few random comments........
Love how this song is *born* from the explosion at the end of Brain of J...again, like with the transition from Lukin to Present Tense, we go from chaos to the serenity of that beautiful opening bassline.......
"it's rare to come upon a bridge that has not been around or been stepped on"...all religions, all types of spirituality, all perspectives have already been around, and practiced, and perpetuated (in my mind, a sort of contrast to the lyric from Satan's Bed..."it's not all been said, been said and done")......
Although, I think the *screaming* could pertain more to the clashes between religions...or between the religious and non-religious...all the wars fought in the name of the *right* belief system........
I think this song also speaks of our faith to ourselves, whether in the vein of religion, ethics, everyday actions...how easily some people compromise themselves...how quickly some give in to temptation, without thought of the consequences...whether the payoff is money, power, sex...takes more strength to hold fast to what we believe in our soul, than to trade it in for a fleeting *reward*........
"m.y.t.h is belief in the game
controls that keeps us in a box of fear"
One of my all-time favorite lyrics...(and again, perhaps a contrast to the above paragraph)...smacks of the thoughts behind Ishmael...how quick (and easy?) it is to blindly believe, without question...to swallow what we're fed, without thought of *where* that belief came from, and its validity........
The "voice inside"...I think that is our *furry thing*...our core, our instinct, the essence of our soul...we can eventually make ourselves deaf to it...or allow others to do that for us...the trick is to keep listening, and not betray that voice........
"me you, you me
it's all related"
Those two lines...I believe THIS is what it's all about...our connections to eachother...the ripple effect of our actions (or inactions), no matter how far that circle reaches.....
And, I really like the wordplay on the title...not just *faithful*...but *full* of faith........
Whew...didn't mean to write a fuckin book

Re: Song of the day(Faithfull)!!!!
it's an amazing song, and so weird after being away from the board for a while, i was only turning the lyrics of faithful round in my head yesterday, and then i pop in here today...and look we're doing song interps
i guess another way of looking at it is the journey
anyone can be led off the path because of misinformation fed to us by others
it's so hard to recognise sometimes
but we each have a core, a part of ourselves that is unique
an instinct that leads us in the right direction
so even though we sometimes take detours
eventually even if it takes years, we end up heading in the direction
we were meant to be heading in
the connection from ourselves to all others does exist
and what you do will have a ripple affect on your life
is the intent behind the action important
should you do something because you're religion, culture whatever tells you to
or should you do something or give love to someone because you're instincts, you're gut is telling you it's the right thing to do.
is the validity of the intent a measure of which we weigh up all actions, or is the action itself enough
can we ever see that if we just show love, constantcy, understanding....faithfullness to those we really have that emotion for we will be " happy & fulfilled ".........
Postive energy always

Re: Song of the day(Faithfull)!!!!
this song reminds me of the parable of the cave
believing what is apparent, or what you're led to believe - and sometimes
belief based on fear - real fear of fear
of what you suspect, despite what you feel inside
be it relationships, religion, what you feel about yourself - even
being a fan
blind faith
i like to think of it as furry thing too instead of everything
don't know why - it just feels like a cuddly little timmy thing, or a tribble
(maybe timmy is related to tribbles?? who knows)
and i love the way it presents ed's voice
"oh the form, the glow surrounds it
precious glow, it feeds the soul"
