Coming on like a distant tidal swell that gradually reveals itself to be a full-blown tsunami, Buzz Holly's debut single "Hawaii" is tightly-wound power pop at its dreamiest. If you're desperate to anthropomorphise influences, visualise The Cars racing down a volcanic mountain road, winding past Rivers Coumo while Eddie Vedder beats The Drums. Singer, songwriter and performer James Gazeley wrote it on a beach in - guess where - on the first of his many travels out of his native UK, and if you close your eyes you can see the lush greenery as the layers of fuzz guitars and falsetto 'oohs' drip off the waxy leaves like hot rain. He has been cherishing and fine-tuning it ever since he left the island, and the countless hours of adding and stripping away and love this track has experienced are not told in unnecessary miscellany, but felt in the gentle rawness of the performance and the careful balance of the production. As a warning shot, this single announces Buzz Holly as uncontrived, emotionally open and chest-tighteningly raucous. It's a mix which has been sorely missed these last few years in guitar music.
