Loooooove this part...

Mind is not a celestial state with idle hymns of praise
Time is short I have an appointment at noon at noon in Hell
Across the waste of space and fields of air I glide alone at night

Beeeeeeeautiful. Makes me feel like I'm flying or something. I don't know, it just really carries me away.

Eddie's voice makes me tear up too. Those high notes? Wow. It sounds cystal clear and gorgeous. Just such beautiful/gorgeous things going on with this song.

~ANGEL~

Like an angel fly over your house
Like an angel pass out wishes
Like an angel I will move the arrow
Like an angel I live alone
I'm not livin' what was promised
I am close but can't enjoy
Oh I'm not dyin'
Oh I'm so tortured 'cause I see all
Tortured and all I cannot do
Tortured all I should have done
Tortured while I occupied a man
I'm not livin' what was promised
I am far from glorified
Oh I'm not dyin'
Oh I'm not alone
Mind is not a celestial state with idle hymns of praise
Time is short I have an appointment at noon at noon in Hell
Across the waste of space and fields of air I glide alone at night
Oh please please think of me 'cause I'm I'm by your side
I'm by your side I'm by your side oh
I'm I'm right in front of you I'm by your side

yeh Eddie wrote this after reading a book called "eloping Angels" i think. I think it's about how Eddie realizes that immortality and allknowingness" is not all it's cracked up to be. "tortchered cas i see all". An angel can't do anything on earth anymore but he overlooks everything that goes on. The divine craves mortality.

As far as lyrics go, the repetitious phrases remind me of Wishlist. Is this song on a studio album? I don't know if I have heard it.

How many times have they played it... anyone ever heard it live?

i think i've heard 2 live versions. both poor quality. might've been from an old bridge benefit show. or in one of ed's pre-opener sets. i know they havent played it since the official boots started.

What a shame, I guess the world will never know what its missing ... but then that goes for most PJ songs , ya know? (:

Didn't Dave A. write it? I heard that he wrote it and that is why it didn't make it on Lost Dogs, due to the legal issues surrounding it.

BUMP this thread. It has been a LONG time since this thread showed up. I think they should resurrect this beautiful song.

Everytime I hear this song, i am constantly reminded of my grandma...such poetic words and lovely melody:)

Import bootleg from the mid-90s called No Fuckin' Messiah

I'm sure it can also be found on the web from ftps, or bittorrent as well.

I'd offer to email you my mp3 version, but it's on my desktop, that is not accessible for a while.

  • The first time i heard that song was almost 11 years ago today.
In the parking lot right before Pearl Jam played Red Rocks in Morrison Colorado..

amazing amazing show on an amazing night at the best venue this side of the Gorge..

too bad they are playing pepsi center this year instead of RR.
Every 4th its either "String Cheese Incident" or Blues Traveler..

They should just hand the amphitheatre over to Pearl Jam and Petty.. The venue alone would make that show an all time classic.

Let's discuss this song, shall we? What is it about? I need to look at the lyrics, too. I like this thread because I was Bibliobella, but Bibliobella no more *sniffle* . . .

Well, after reading the lyrics I see this isn't the happiest of songs, is it? It's like the person in "Please Let Me Sleep" dies, and is floating over another person almost dying, too. I'm going to read those lyrics again just in case I'm far off. I guess I need to hear this one. Anyone have a copy they can email me or whatever?

Aha! Thank you to the kind poster who sent the link. Well, a little rocky at first, eh? However, I think the change into the "hymm" like melody reflects a certain clevernesss. I think the beginning would be better spruced up a little like a bona fide rock song. With the acoustic I feel Eddie is trying too hard to fit the sentiment of the words into the music, but that sentiment is too passionate for acoustic.

I wish they would play this live, though. I think it could be very powerful live. It's appropriate any time of year it seems. I think it would be great live.
