Matt Cameron has been an icon of the alternative scene for decades, performing as drummer for both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Now, for the first time, he’s stepping out from behind the kit to lead his own solo project.
Due out later this year, Cameron’s debut album, Cavedweller, finds Cameron serving as producer, writer, singer, and guitarist. As he hints at in an exclusive comment to Consequence of Sound, Cameron was supported by a number of artists on the record, including the drummer from David Bowie’s ★ (Blackstar) backing band, Mark Guiliana. More names will be revealed soon.
Here’s what else Cameron had to say about the album:
“Making my first ever solo record, Cavedweller,
has been a blast. I was lucky enough to work with incredible musicians
to help bring my songs to life. As a band member, I have been able to
collaborate with the very best musicians and songwriters of my
generation. Those experiences have given me the confidence to find my
own voice as a songwriter. I really enjoyed making this record and I
look forward to making the next one.”
PEARL JAM/SOUNDGARDEN Drummer MATT CAMERON To Release 'Cavedweller' Solo Album
Drummer Matt Cameron, who has played with SOUNDGARDEN, PEARL JAM and TEMPLE OF THE DOG, will release a new solo album titled "Cavedweller" on September 22 via Migraine Music.
The track listing for the disc is as follows:
01. Time Can't Wait 02. All At Once 03. Blind 04. Through The Ceiling 05. One Special Lady 06. In The Trees 07. Into The Fire 08. Real And Imagined 09. Unnecessary
A teaser for the album is available below.
In a 2016 interview with The Trap Set, Cameron compared working with SOUNDGARDEN to PEARL JAM, saying: "It's just different band dynamics in general... I think my role in SOUNDGARDEN is a little bit more of a musical director role, whereas in PEARL JAM it's more of a supporting in the rhythm section kind of role. I think the collaboration I have in SOUNDGARDEN is bigger in the creative realm, but I feel very fortunate to be in two really fantastic bands."
The Pulse Of Radio asked Cameron a while back if he
altered his style for either band. "I don't think I do," he said. "I
mean, I'm just really trying to play my role in each group. I definitely
feel like I support the vocal in both groups. The music around the
vocal is a little bit different. But that's the way I've always
considered my drumming, is vocal-influenced. I've been lucky enough to
play with two of the best singers in modern day history, so I think
that's always sort of been my strength as a drummer."
Asked about playing in two of the most successful and influential rock groups of the past twenty-five years, Cameron told The Trap Set:
"I totally earned it, I worked my tail off for it, but I think there's
always an element of luck in success in the music industry, for sure."
Cameron was inducted with PEARL JAM into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this past April.
SOUNDGARDEN has been eligible for induction since 2012 but has yet to be nominated.
Pre-orders are available now through Amazon,
which indicates the album is expected to arrive later this month on
Sept. 22 through Migraine Music. According to the online retailer, Cavedweller carries a 29-minute, 31 second runtime, making for a relatively quick listen by full length album standards.
