Ed Vedder's DC Show

(Joined the message board just to say what I’m about to say so take this rant for what it’s worth – which I understand may be shit, in your opinion.)

Went to the DC show Saturday night. The crowd ruined it. Seriously, it was really disappointing and irritating to hear people screaming like that while the guy was up there trying to do his thing.

These performances are not Pearl Jam shows. The audience is not standing at a huge venue in a sea of drunkenness but instead sitting in a small, intimate and - might I add - beautiful theater. It would have been nice if people recognized the difference between the two situations and acted appropriately.

When one also takes into account that Ed Vedder appears to be doing these shows mostly for charity, it makes last night seem even worse. Give a person a little respect. And need certain people be reminded that – noble purpose aside, the man happens to be a major musician!?! People (like me) pay a lot of money to hear his original stuff in that type of setting (if they’re lucky enough to get tickets).

It must be lost on some people that a lot of hard work goes into making this production happen on his end. As a musician, part of the payoff is supposed to be that when you do a solo tour, you can expect to be able to hear a pin drop. For people to actually...uh ...listen. Even if that kind of response from people is something that had to be earned, I think he has certainly done so. Shit.

It wouldn’t have been quite so uncomfortable to watch if he didn't actually say that the rudeness was really pissing him off…and messing up the songs! Why would anyone want to ruin the show for the person actually doing the show? So inconsiderate. And stupid - I think common sense dictates that the best shows are the ones during which the performer has a good experience.

Oh and it was being recorded. Nice.

Attention-craving fans will do anything just to make their mark and/or get noticed. It’s really sick and geeky at the same time. Ed Vedder could be wondering where all his cool fans are after that, which is sad.

Went to one of the San Diego shows – rude interruptions there as well but not as bad.

Well whatever – he did a good job considering and we had fun despite the bullshit.

The End

I was there, I know how much it sucks and I know how badly you want to tell Eddie sorry, but there's been so much talk about it and quite frankly, it already happened. Plus, I think we pretty much made it up by being a great crowd on night 2.

I don't remember anyone yelling, you sure you weren't the one who was drunk?

Possible sarcasm from you aside, I found that it really varied in Milwaukee as to where you were seated. I enjoyed the show and didn't hear much of the shouting...unfortunately Ed heard all of it.

You have a right to vent like everyone else did.

I was at both shows in DC and I was not too bothered by the screamers but I know many people were and I can see why.

Possible solution: if we can, we should just try to ignore them as much as possible. Like with a child, if you give them attention when they do negative things they will keep doing them.

On their side, if they know that it bothers the audience and Eddie, it would be real nice if they could be kind and respect others and just be quiet. It is kind of wierd though that they have been everywhere he has played. Is there a "Let's scream out at 'Eddie Vedder's shows' Club that gets together somewhere??

Anyways, try to not let it ruin your overall experience too much. Maybe someday we will laugh about it all...like the story of them hauling the 400 guy (bless him) off the floor and Eddie started doing push-ups?!? That's funny!

I joined here just to bitch about the DC1 show too. I was mortified by the 'fans' who were acting like idiots.

and for those of you who say "yeah, that sucked but at least I have the other 10 shows to look forward too" see, that was the one show I got to see. I don't have another chance. That is what really sucks for me.

i think part of the problem with the yellers, aside from them being inconsiderate douchebags, is that eddie is a nice guy, he's too nice about it, he acknowledges its anoying, but he's funny about it, so that sort of encourages these people to keep it up. if he was firm about it from the get go and said, "anyone who yells out will be thrown out immediatley", or something to that effect, i bet the tour would be a lot different. it seems like its the same story from city to city and its a shame.

it should be no cameras, no filming, no phones, no yelling. thats it.
My favorite Pearl Jam song: "Corporate Greed Boat Asshole Behind a Counter in the Oval Office"

No alcohol would solve a lot of problems at these types of shows. At least it would have stopped the kid in row H Seat 16 from making animal noises, or his mom for standing up and blocking everyone's view during No More. Then again... maybe not.

Are you talking about a kid on the right side of the stage? I was in Row G and think i was sitting right in front of this kid.

Where in Row G were you? I was as well - seats 111&112. Right in the middle, they were absolutely perfect.

My two cents on the shouters is - who f'ing cares. It's inevitable that they'll always be there and if you noticed EVERYONE was zoned in during the songs (at least from my vantage point). In between songs was a different story, but whatever. Personally I think the self-righteous douche "Shh-ers" were just making it worse. No one needs your policing. All it does is remind me of is grade school with little childrens shushing each other and just making ten times the noise.

I was on the far right side of the theater. Seats were very good too. Being in the middle would have been even better.

Here's the thing... you're not at a "Pearl Jam" show. These venues were chosen to provide an intimate setting to listen to a singer and his guitar. I would not have a problem with the shouting, etc. during a "Pearl Jam" concert because volume is all part of the show....the band is loud, the crowd is loud and they feed off of each other. It was clear that several people in this crowd just didn't get it.

If that makes me self righteous...then I can handle that. I paid alot more than face value for those tickets and believe it or not I paid it to hear Eddie Vedder and not some douchebags in the crowd who just really wanted him to acknowledge that they were there. I was right in the thick of douchebag central and it really detracted from what was a pretty damn good performance. They should stop serving alcohol at these shows...that might cut down on some of this.

Exactly. And hey, beer is awesome and very enjoyable. I wasn't double fisting, but smoking an L before the show and having a beer while Liam played is just fine.

they shouldn't sell beer at the shows.
