Yes, both of those extremes have occurred under communist and socialist regimes, particularly communism. But there have been societies that utilize socialism in a way that hasn't led to those extremes.

Fiji, for example, is basically socialist. I'm not sure they refer to it as such but I know people who have lived there and they tell me everything is shared. Need a hammer? There's one over at Ratu's. Take it- it will makes it's way back again. Not happy with what's cooking for dinner? Go over to Selina's. She's making Kokoda tonight. That sort of thing happens all the time. People are happy.

But I digress. Why label everyone on the left as communist or socialist? I just don't see it.
