No Sympathy

87% of residents voted for Trump. They bragged about by extension low taxes, small government and against climate change. Guess who's begging Trump for help? Build a wall around their island community, they cry. As only they matter. No sympathy.

I have very little sympathy for people who live near the ocean.  New Orleans for example.  Perhaps not live in a place that you have to invest billions into levies just to keep from being 10 feet under water.

Anyway.  Humans are part of nature.  People say humans are causing the seas to rise.  Thus, by the transitive property nature is causing the seas to rise.   I'm not going to get worked up over nature.  Sorry Miami beach.

People are easily manipulated. Perhaps some of them will see the error in their ways.

I can understand how some people voted for Trump. Especially the down and out even if they were completely duped. To think that the billionaire Mr. Ego was suddenly a man of the people is real stupidity but he did give them a voice even if it was a lie. I guess they felt they had nothing to lose.

Now, the rich elites who voted for Trump? That's where I have no sympathy. They voted out of their own greed and personal gain. I consider them 100x more responsible for Trump as President than I do some struggling family from the middle of the country.

they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get off the government teet, those poor snowflakes...

seriously, they voted for trump, let him save them. as cold hearted as that sounds, that is how i feel.

i had that same discussion with a person calling to raise money for vets the other day. every year i donate a couple hundred bucks to veteran charities. sometimes it is money i don't have to spend and end up putting it on the credit card. i make sacrifices to make that payment every year. this guy called me wanting to send me a pledge card to renew my donation and i declined for the first time since 2003. i told him that the majority of the military voted for trump, as did the majority of the disabled vets. trump said he has a terrific plan for them and said that he raised millions for them. let's see what trump can do for them. i am sitting this one out. the guy got an attitude with me, rightly so, but that is how i feel these days. they wanted trump, let him help them. i told the guy to call me next year and my thoughts may change by then. this year i am not putting myself out to help people who voted for someone who is incompetent and incapable of being president. if that makes me an asshole, then i will own it and i will wear it.

    That place is fuckin weird.
It definitely is an odd place but it's not like voting for trump started this.  I still feel bad for these people.  Just because they voted for a candidate (at least they voted) doesn't give anyone the right to to wish their house under water.

I guess it really makes sense to feel badly for people on an individual basis.  But in a more generalized sense, I find it very difficult for people who play Russian roulette, especially when 97% of the ballistics experts are telling them all cylinders are loaded.

I have no sympathy for anyone who voted for Trump, particularly when you consider the power and influence America wields over the rest of the world. America first usually means a lot of trouble for the rest of us who live outside of the USA.

True, but I'm guessing most of them will get screwed on other issues besides environment.  You will likely see more "No Sympathy" threads related to that as well.

Let's face it, a very small percentage of people will have their lives improved by this administration and many will suffer some bad consequences.  At least fewer than would have under almost any other.  I wasn't/ am not a Hillary fan but most people and the planet would have been better off under her (and even more under... but I digress...)

Maybe not so very many people, but those people on that island - they should have.  Their homes, their livelihood, their history; it's all at risk. Maybe they should have looked a little harder at their candidate.

Clinton won our state, but there were a few areas that went with Trump. The area I live in did as well, unfortunately. I still don't understand why the working class in this area votes Republican. We've had a few businesses that employed hundreds, if not thousands with private owners sell to increase their own profit margins. All any Republican has to say are keywords including guns, immigration reform and jobs and people buy it hook, line and sinker. Sad.

Maybe they are conservatives? Maybe they are Republicans who always vote Republicans no matter who the candidate is. Maybe they were middle of the road voters who felt slighted or forgotten by the Democrats as many have said and it was a strike back. Maybe they fell, like you said hook, line and sinker for every promise issued by Trump. Maybe they just hated Hillary. There's lots of possibilities

Trump won western Maryland bigly. It was a yuge victory.  And that pretty much hits the nail on the head. All ya gotta say is guns & illegals and they all follow like mindless lemmings.  If it weren't for the I-95 & 270 corridors, Maryland would be doomed.

I'm a bit surprised by this. Does this mean I should stop giving to the United way, etc every year a democrat is in office as they promise to have great plans for welfare?

I find this reason just....weird. To each their own I guess

I very much doubt Trump gives two poops about some little Island community somewhere.  The people who voted for him seemed to actually believe he would make life better for them, not seeing the obvious- that he is an habitual and unrepentant liar.

Maybe they fell, like you said hook, line and sinker for every promise issued by Trump. Maybe they just hated Hillary. There's lots of possibilities

Yep. All I heard for 8 years from lots of these people was how terrible (and lots of other disgusting adjectives) Obama was. I'd wager that by voting Trump, in their minds they were "righting a wrong". I'm pretty sure that these same people couldn't fathom a woman being in charge. Donald Trump doesn't have any experience in politics and he's filed bankruptcy 6 times and had 4 marriages. That is the definition of a failure.

I consider myself an independent. The best person for the job should win. I actually liked John McCain as a candidate until they sabotaged him with Sarah Palin. The American political system has become a joke. It's no different than a reality show. Paul Ryan making excuses, saying Trump's "New to the job and politics and didn't know better."  Please. That's grounds for dismissal in a job like the Presidency.

As far as jobs go, they're out there. Some of these same people that say there aren't any are the same ones that think they're too good to commute or work in a restaurant or Target/Wal Mart. We moved here because the cost of living is half of what we paid in Northern VA and we're close to some major cities in NC. Then we get hit with HB2? What the FUCK? It's like some of the people in rural areas want to go back to the 1950's and demand that the rest of the country goes with them, even though they never frequent the cities themselves.

The environmental policies that the Dem's put in place were a source of discomfort for  the Republicans because they're really not forward thinkers/planners. It's all about control and wealth for a lot of them.

A proposed seawall to be completed this year. The article doesn't mention who is building it or paying for it....where does Trump come in?
I very much doubt Trump gives two poops about some little Island community somewhere.  The people who voted for him seemed to actually believe he would make life better for them, not seeing the obvious- that he is an habitual and unrepentant liar.
The original poster commented Trump. Obviously the article indicated they've had this problem for some time. So I didn't understand the Trump involvement. As far as the seawall being the request now, I understand the OP saying good luck getting help from Trump. It just took me a sec to tie the 2 together. I thought before I read the article there was going to be a quote from Trump.
Oh please let it rain today.

I see.   I think OP's intent is to show how so many people were duped by Trump.  His approval rating is insanely low and I don't have a clue as to how he even has that much approval.  What is there to approve of.  I don't get it!

I should have explained, and my apologies for not doing so, that I saw a piece on CNN where the reporter interviewed inhabitants of the community. Their town is 4' above sea level. One of the exterior shots was of a house that had a banner on the roof proclaiming 87% of residents voted Trump. They went on to lament that if Trump wants to build a wall, he should build one around their town, yuck, yuck, yuck. Then they went on to plead to please help them. I was struck by the banner on the roof and what Trump represents: climate change denier, slash government funding for every agency that would or could help them and withdrawing from Paris Climate Accord and burning more fossil fuels. Small government Trump doesn't give a shit about your slowly disappearing community never mind the cost of building a wall around your island community. I found it laughable. Elections have consequences.
