'98 saw them both shows at Alpine Valley. Great memories
6/26/98 & 6/27/98 - Alpine Valley, 10/9/00 - Allstate Arena - Rosemont, IL 6/18/2003 - United Center, 5/16/2006 - United Center, 5/17/2006 - United Center (7th row center, caught Eddie's pick), 6/29/2006 - Summerfest with Tom Petty, 8/24/2009 - United Center, 7/19/2013 - Wrigley Field, 10/3/2014 - St Louis, 10/17/2014 - Moline (GA), 10/20/2014 - Milwaukee, 5/14/2015 - Pete Townshend/EV, 8/20/16 & 8/22/16 Wrigley Field Part 2&3, 8/18/18 & 8/20/18 Wrigley Parts 4 & 5, 9/18/2022 - St Louis
My memory from this tour is me and my brother driving from Memphis to Knoxville for the show then driving back the same night
I have a similar story. I drove across Canada with a friend of mine. We took a minor detour to Montana to see PJ at the start and got back to Vancouver at the end and saw that show too. I was home for a day (After being on the road for about 5 weeks) saw my brother and asked him he if felt like going to Seattle. Rushed to TM, got last minute GA tix, just made the ferry, drove down to seattle and got the stage 5 minutes for the band took the stage.
It was pretty sweet. Given how much planning stuff seems to take now, it was amazing how quickly that came together.
My favorite tour ever. Best setlists, best merch, best bootlegs.
That Ed quote is from Camden 1. It was their first Philly area show in 6 years i think. They ended up taking that quote and throwing it on Lo2L before a song from a different show. I had every NA show on cassette by fall 98 so i remember some ridiculous shit
did 4 shows on this tour. Knoxville was a last minute addition for me. I remember calling my work and telling them I had a flat tire. I was chasing "Hard to Imagine" and when they played it, I lost my fucking mind. still my favorite PJ concert of all time. and prob the worst seats I have ever had at a PJ show.

Got to see 3 shows that tour. Got an Oceans opener, the band recreating McGwire's 62nd homer with a ping pong ball, and Ed swinging from the mic cord at MSG... great memories
1996: Randall's Island 2 1998: East Rutherford | MSG 1 & 2 2000: Cincinnati | Columbus | Jones Beach 1, 2, & 3 | Boston 1 | Camden 1 & 2 2003: Philadelphia | Uniondale | MSG 1 & 2 | Holmdel 2005: Atlantic City 1 2006: Camden 1 | East Rutherford 1 & 2 2008: Camden 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 | Newark (EV) 2009: Philadelphia 1, 2 & 4 2010: Newark | MSG 1 & 2 2011: Toronto 1 2013: Wrigley Field | Brooklyn 2 | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore 2015: Central Park 2016: Philadelphia 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 | Fenway Park 2 | MSG (TOTD) 2017: Brooklyn (RnR HOF) 2020: MSG | Asbury Park2021: Asbury Park 2022: MSG | Camden | Nashville 2024: MSG 1 & 2 (#50) | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore
saw 2 shows on that tour and for sure i am massively nostalgic BUT these days we get no opener, a GA pit, and 32-35 songs! compared to 25-27 in 1998.... i ain't living in the past on this one...rolling stone is wrong(again). it should be pearl jam 2016 IMNSHO

Don't forget the classic tiki torch background.

I don't know if I agree with that. I always felt the '98 tour was something magical. They hit that perfect balance point between youth and experience.
The current 3 hour shows are amazing, but I don't think the length of the shows negate everything that came before.
I'd say my favourite tours that I've seen have been:
'98 '05 '16 '13
So I do rank the recent tours pretty high on my list, but something about those shows back in the day. Not only was the band younger, but the crowds were younger. The yield tour was before they went to mandatory seating. Many of the shows at GA Floors/Seated Seats (not all but many). Seattle, the whole stadium was GA. That many 20 something's with a giant GA sections, for a band that had barely toured since they hit the height for their game. The energy was cosmic
98 Phoenix was my first show after near misses in 93 (Mesa, AZ) and 95 (Phoenix). Such an awesome experience. The old Phoenix Veteran's Coliseum was rocking so hard with everyone jumping in unison and not an inch of extra space on the floor. It is the standard for all shows I will ever see. 2013 US tour would be a close second (made the Phx, SD, LAx2 swing), IMO. But after listening to many of the 98 shows, that tour will likely live at the top of my list forever.

There is absolutely no comparison between 98 and 2016 shows. Every single song in 98 was kick ass. Those first five albums were near perfection and for many fans it was the first time seeing pj live since they had finally dropped the Ticketmaster battle and played normal places. I ll take quality over quantity any day of the week. The yield tour blows the 2016 tour out of the water.
personally speaking i absolutely love the fixer, just breathe and severed hand and all of riot act and unthought known and and...so let's face facts...it's a matter of personal opinion! so the yield tour does not blow away 2016's version of pearl jam. sorry people!!

98 Tour had bat wings. Any tour with bat wings is a winner.
1996: Randall's Island 2 1998: East Rutherford | MSG 1 & 2 2000: Cincinnati | Columbus | Jones Beach 1, 2, & 3 | Boston 1 | Camden 1 & 2 2003: Philadelphia | Uniondale | MSG 1 & 2 | Holmdel 2005: Atlantic City 1 2006: Camden 1 | East Rutherford 1 & 2 2008: Camden 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 | Newark (EV) 2009: Philadelphia 1, 2 & 4 2010: Newark | MSG 1 & 2 2011: Toronto 1 2013: Wrigley Field | Brooklyn 2 | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore 2015: Central Park 2016: Philadelphia 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 | Fenway Park 2 | MSG (TOTD) 2017: Brooklyn (RnR HOF) 2020: MSG | Asbury Park2021: Asbury Park 2022: MSG | Camden | Nashville 2024: MSG 1 & 2 (#50) | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore
Personally, every tour year has been a winner, which is why 2017 sucks! Worst PJ tour year ever
In my younger years, I thought that Eddie and the band sounded worse on every record/tour and I wished for the early days, and then I realized that I couldn't compare their previous stuff because they are always changing, which is why I love them. Now I truly appreciate every album and tour. I don't know that I could rank what was their best tour year. '98 was amazing, but so was '00 and '03 and so on. Ed fucked up songs as much in '98 as he did in '16 and has his off nights, but energy wise, I think they are bringing more than they did in the late 90's early '00's.
Did 4 shows on the Yield tour (MSG and Mansfield). It's hard to believe that they had only been around 6-7 years at that point. Just an amazing tour with some amazing shows. Would love to get some more high quality bootlegs from that tour.
Agree with the above in that they were barely playing 2hr shows on this tour (some of them 90-95min or so) and 24-27 songs. But they were super tight and on point. Still mixed up their sets really well. And Ed's vocals just soared.
Don't forget that back then they played songs a lot slower too, so playing 30 songs now faster may be similar to some of the shows back then on length.
I didn't get to see them on this Tour because of some family issues, but at the time, it really felt that the band had made peace with a lot and was just ready to play music for people again. Matt Cameron brought in an entirely new spark and "closed the circle" . They had so much fun that they wanted to document it with a live record. The shows from this period just sound fun and tight but loose.
I love the 2013-2014 era, but the '98 and '00 shows are still some of my favorites to listen to. I love how PJ's live show has evolved throughout their career. I feel so fortunate as a fan to be able and look back at any particular period and find quality live recordings for whatever mood I'm in. The Yield Tour will always be in contention for "All Time Best". I would like a mid '90's show for a Vault release someday, but should they continue with the '98's, I'd be cool with it.

I thought all the shows were around 2 hours on the yield tour. I don't think there were any super short 90 minutes shows (unless part of a festival?). The crazy thing was 2 hours was considered long back then. Not many of their contemporaries even played that long. The shows also started to drift longer than 2 hours by the end of a leg. I guess the guys got more and more stamina as the tour went on.
One of my favourite memories was at Vancouver '98. They played Ledbetter to close out the show, and the rest of the band is ready to leave, and Eddie is like 1 more, 1 more.... and convinces the band to play another, and we my first blistering version of Baba O' Riley.
I guess that's one thing that hasn't change. No matter how long they play it's never long enough. That night 2 hours wasn't long enough. At Wrigley this year they struggled containing themselves to 3 hours. The first night they had the houselights/music turn on after the 2nd encore, and took some effort to be able to finished the show (going 20 minutes long). At Wrigley 2 they really seemed to be on point but struggled with containing everything they wanted to do within the 3 hour allotment. Speeding through Ledbetter just to get to I've got a Feeling.
There's not many bands that play for 3 hours and it doesn't feel long enough (for fans or for the band).
