Mastodon's "Emperor Of Sand" (Brendan O'Brien)

Just wondering why BoB doesn't / won't do for PJ what he does for Mastodon's latest release.
"Emperor Of Sand" is sonically amazing. So is "Crack The Skye".

Did he do "Crack the Skye" as well? I've only listened to the album once, and I liked it, but it usually takes me a few listens to really have an opinion.

Long time Mastodon fan but man this is easily the best record I have heard in years. For sure their best since Crack the Skye. Brendan and Mastodon are an amazing mix.

"Emperor Of Sand" has been on non-stop repeat on my home high-fi for days now. So have their previous albums.

Mastodon is one of those rare bands where each album release is better than the last. They legitimately have not put out a "bad" album.

I'll have to give this a spin. They've lost me with the last couple since Skye. Love that one and Blood Mountain.

A lot of love for Mastodon here....... people have always told me I would love them as I'm really into Tool.

What would be a good album to start with?

I would start with Blood Mountain. After that Leviathan. Remission (fire), Leviathan (water), Blood Mountain (earth), and Crack the Skye (air) are all concept albums. They also go in order of heaviest to most melodic. If you get the chance to see them live I would go!
The last PJ show I went to was the best PJ show ever, that is until they come around again of course

I was also told to start with Blood Mountain and it worked for me! The Hunter might be more accessible as a rock album, but Blood Mountain gives you a good sense of what Mastodon is.

They recorded their first 2 or 3 records at Studio Litho with Matt Bayless. I know Jeff Ament is a fan. Can probably bank on him being at either their show in Missoula or Seattle next week.

So the new album is in my opinion better than the last two (once more round the sun & the hunter) but its not on par with the first four.
Its got some good stuff, but they never truly nail it for me.

I'm with you on this one. I don't think it's a CTS2 like others are saying, but it's definitely up there. The middle of the album is super strong and finishes even stronger. But CTS is an untouchable album for me. Start to finish, it's amazing.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

I'm sure the more i listen the more i'll enjoy it, also there are some songs i think will be even better live without some of the production. Again not disliking it..... I'm just don't get the "i got hit in the face by a great album" feel i got when i first heard their first four albums originally.
