And, crucially, he has an entire political party and multimillion-dollar propaganda outlets repeating and reinforcing the lies. He, and they, have cast enough doubt in the minds of about 10% of the country so that they don’t know what to think.

But the debt owed to the truth is coming due.

I’m not going to ladle praise on Marjorie Taylor Greene here, but I will give her this much: Whatever her motivations, she stood up to the guy. Ditto Tom Massie. 

Their actions are communicating to the MAGA base in a way no Democrat could that Trump is lying about Jeffrey Epstein in some way, shape, or form. The seed is thus planted in the collective MAGA mind that Trump might sometimes be full of beans.

And the more Trump keeps bragging about the greatest economy in the history of the mind of God, the more people will see him as a conman.

All have one thing in common: they appear to be connected to the Trump family’s campaign to amass riches around the world. Since Donald Trump’s re-election a year ago, warnings that his use of presidential power to advance personal interests is corroding American democracy have grown ever louder. What is less understood – and perhaps even more dangerous – is the damage this is doing everywhere else.

Trump’s eldest sons, Don Jr and Eric, formally the custodians of the family business, are conducting a global dealmaking blitz. They have broken ground on new golf courses, received permission for new skyscrapers, rented out the Trump brand, and in cryptocurrency they have embraced a venture with the capacity to bring in more than everything that has gone before.

They insist, in Eric’s words, that there is a “huge wall” between this moneymaking and their father’s position as the most powerful man alive. “Nothing I do has anything to do with the White House,” Eric told CNN recently.

But Kristofer Harrison, a senior foreign policy official under President George W Bush who now runs an anti-corruption organisation called the Dekleptocracy Project, is among those accusing the Trumps of operating a “pay to play” system that benefits those who do business with the president’s family. Such an approach could be manipulated, he said, especially by rival powers such as China. He said: “Trump has made authoritarians’ wildest dreams come true.”

Despite allegations – denied by the White House – of conflicts of interest, no explicit quid pro quos have been proven. But the Trumps’ business interests are raising questions about convictions that have been quashed, sensitive technologies transferred, tariffs eased, alliances forged. Should any of this give the appearance of abuse of public office for private gain – commonly known as corruption – ethics experts fear it invites other rulers to do the same.

In Trump’s first term, the chief concern was whether foreign rulers would take expensive suites at Trump’s Washington hotel as a way of putting money in his pocket. He pledged that there would be no family business deals abroad. That pledge has now been ditched. And although the president has put his stakes in the family’s businesses in a trust, his financial disclosures show profits still flow to him.

The Trumps’ most natural allies – first in business, now also in politics – have long been the rulers of the Gulf’s petro-monarchies, who see no distinction between their states’ interests and their families’.

Since last year, the Trumps’ business in the region has accelerated. A golf course in Oman; Dubai apartments going on sale. Chuck Schumer, the Democrats’ leader in the Senate, said Trump’s trip to the Middle East in May seemed “less like a presidential visit and more like a personal business venture”.

In Qatar, a golf resort deal with a state company in April was followed the next month by the gift of a “flying palace” for Trump to use as Air Force One, then in October he committed US troops to defend the tiny Gulf state. In Saudi Arabia, where new golf and hotel projects are already under way, news in November of yet another potential venture – in a development overseen by the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman – emerged days before Trump agreed to sell F-35 fighter jets to the kingdom.

Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and sometime diplomatic envoy, said recently: “What people call conflicts of interests … I call experience and trusted relationships that we have throughout the world.” The Saudis have given his fund billions.

Asked to comment for this article, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said: “The media’s continued attempts to fabricate conflicts of interest are irresponsible and reinforce the public’s distrust in what they read. Neither the president nor his family have ever engaged, or will ever engage, in conflicts of interest.”

Ben Rhodes, who was Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser, argues that the Trumps’ approach amounts to “nothing more than an old-fashioned grift tethered to a superpower”.

“It’s incalculable what damage we are now seeing,” said Rhodes. “Corruption,” he believes, “is now the norm in geopolitics.”

Trump’s night of 160 posts on Truth Social fuels debate about US president’s stamina

The 79-year-old president’s social media blitz included conspiracies, attacks on political foes and self-praise

From apparently nodding off in the Oval Office to a work day that often only begins in the afternoon, questions have swirled in recent weeks about the energy levels of 79-year-old Donald Trump, the oldest-ever US president.

Yet on social media, the commander in chief is showing no signs of fatigue. In a furious spree Monday night on his preferred social media paltform, Truth Social, Trump posted 160 times in less than four hours, a maelstrom of messaging surpassing previous prolific bouts of ranting.

At one point, according to the Daily Beast, which published Tuesday a chronicle of the avalanche of words and videos that appeared from 7.09pm ET until 11.57pm, the president’s posts were coming in faster than one a minute.

Several of the messages attacked familiar political foes, such as Mark Kelly, the Democratic Arizona senator, among six congressional Democrats who drew the president’s ire last week for reminding military members they could disobey unlawful commands from their superiors.

“Mark Kelly and the group of Unpatriotic Politicians were WRONG to do what they did, and they know it!” Trump wrote. “I hope the people looking at them are not duped into thinking that it’s OK to openly and freely get others to disobey the President of the United States!”

Gavin Newsom, the California governor; Tim Walz and Ilhan Omar, respectively the Democratic governor and congresswoman for Minnesota; former House speaker, Nancy Pelosi; Barack Obama and Joe Biden; the former FBI chief, James Comey; and the former attorney general, Eric Holder, were also singled out for attacks.

Numerous other posts were typically self-congratulatory. One video, reposted twice, features Republican Florida congressman Byron Donalds talking up Trump’s agenda, alongside adulatory commentary hailing him as “the greatest president to ever live”.

Another, in keeping with the season, celebrates Trump’s assertion that “Christmas is officially great again”, with a still of himself and actor Macaulay Culkin in a scene from the movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Trump has previously denied claims by its director Chris Columbus that he “bullied” his way into a cameo role.

Mind-boggling conspiracy theories abounded. One post credits billionaire Elon Musk, the former head of Trump’s “department of government efficiency” (Doge), for “saving” the 2024 election from being stolen by tracking down in Serbia the IP addresses of computerized machines that would have altered votes, and rendering them useless.

Another states that Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democratic congresswoman now serving as Trump’s director of national intelligence, is in possession of documents “exposing” Obama’s leadership in the “Russiagate hoax” against Trump during his first term.

In yet another, Trump reposted the easily disprovable claim that millions of illegal immigrants “registered to vote, and have voted” in US elections, despite it being illegal to do so.

And a video Trump shared from discredited Infowars founder Alex Jones included a caption claiming “Michelle Obama may have used Biden’s autopen in the final days of his disastrous administration to pardon key individuals”.

A notable feature of Trump’s Monday spree was the level of repetition. A majority of the reposts from other people’s accounts appeared twice, once in original form, then again almost immediately with commentary added by Trump, or another person who reposted it.

The US president appears to have finally made it to bed sometime after midnight, but was up bright and early again Tuesday to resume his finger tapping with posts concerning the upcoming Georgia governor’s election, and Tuesday’s congressional House race in Tennessee, attempting to shore up support for the Republican candidate.

“Truth Social is the best. There is nothing even close!!!” Trump posted. Twice.

BREAKING: Trump’s “Made-In-America” MAGA phone scam explodes as delivery date passes WITHOUT A SINGLE SHIPMENT.

Donald Trump’s latest business venture — the so-called “Trump Mobile” phone — is spiraling into yet another classic MAGA grift, complete with broken promises, fake photos, vanishing claims, and a whole lot of angry customers wondering where their money went. In other words, it's a perfect metaphor for the entire Trump brand.

Back in June, Trump’s sons strutted into Trump Tower and unveiled what they hyped as a brand-new, American-made smartphone — a patriotic red-white-and-blue “T1” device that would supposedly take on Apple and Samsung while carrying the Trump empire into the tech world. They promised it would ship in August. They plastered it with an American flag and bragged that it was built “right here in the USA.”

But fast-forward three months, and there is still no phone, no launch, no updates — and absolutely no sign that this product was ever real.

NBC News even ordered the $499 phone, paid the required $100 deposit, and received the Trumpian equivalent of a “Congratulations, you’ve been scammed!” email. Then came a string of excuses, contradictory ship dates, and customer-service reps who couldn’t keep their stories straight. At one point, Trump Mobile claimed the government shutdown prevented them from shipping a smartphone — a level of absurdity usually reserved for satire.

But that’s only the beginning.

Behind the scenes, someone at Trump Mobile has been quietly rewriting the company’s website like a panicked student editing a term paper at 3 a.m. Gone is any reference to “Made in the USA.” Suddenly, the phone is merely “brought to life in the USA.” It has an “American-proud design” — whatever that means — but no promises about where it’s actually made. Spoiler alert: experts say it’s basically impossible to build a full smartphone in America on the timeline Trump promised. One U.S. manufacturer said it took six years and still relies on foreign parts.

Meanwhile, the marketing images for the T1 phone keep magically changing. At first, Trump Mobile posted photos of a phone with a triple-camera design. Then, out of nowhere, they posted a different photo — this time featuring way more cameras — claiming “The wait is almost over!” Except someone noticed that the picture looked suspiciously like a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in a Spigen case. Then Spigen noticed too… and suggested they might sue.

You cannot make this up.

So what is Trump selling while customers wait for the mythical MAGA phone?
Refurbished iPhones — made in China.
Samsung devices — made in South Korea.
All advertised as being “brought to life right here in the USA.”

This isn’t a smartphone business. It’s a grift disguised as patriotism, powered by Trump-branded marketing fluff and designed to squeeze money out of his base one $100 “preorder deposit” at a time.

And it fits a familiar pattern: the Trump Watch Collection (up to $100,000 per watch), the “God Bless the USA Bible” (which earned Trump $1.3 million), and now a phone that appears to exist only in Trump Tower PowerPoints and Photoshopped renders.

The truth is simple: The Trump Mobile T1 was never “Made in America.”It was never ready for launch. And it may never have been real.

But the $100 deposits? Oh, those are very real.

Welcome to the MAGA economy — where the products are imaginary, the patriotism is fake, and the only thing made in the USA is the money flowing into Donald Trump’s pockets.
