Because, let's face it, the story arc of Episode 7 was pretty much an exact copy of 4. And I liked the darkness of Rogue One.

R1 could be better after a rewatch but for now it's TFA.

my first reaction was Force awakens, but after seeing rogue one and letting that sink in, it's too close too call for me.

Do you consider other Star Wars movies to be good? If so then yes this is worth seeing. If not it might be a skip.

The more I reflect on R1, the more I like it. Think I am going to see it again with my brother.
I liked FA very much -- but I find when it is on cable I only watch snippets of it. For super fans I can understand why FA would be embraced more, but by most any other measurement I find R1 to be a better film.

because the element that is unique to the star wars stories is The Force ... it is remarkably absent as a character unto itself in Rogue One ...

although the single best sequence of the entire star wars movies for me is the transfer of the plans to leia and vader boarding the ships in Rogue One ...

I don't see how R1 could be considered better.
The character development is incredibly slow for a group of characters that will never be seen again.
Forrest Whitaker was a huge letdown. Corny character with corny lines that does nothing.
The acting performances were not up to snuff with FA, but the action was pretty good.
The Vader scene was badass, a perfect blend of speed and immobility for him, light years ahead of the fighting from the originals.
There should have been a few more scenes with Vader, they were the highlights of the film.

I saw R1 on Monday. My first reaction was that FA is better. Mind you I think R1 is fantastic and the longer I sit with it, the better it gets. I plan on re-watching FA on Thursday. Maybe then I'll be able to vote. Until then...

I am one with the force, the force is with me.

Then definitely see it. This is set right before Episode IV and is heavy with original trilogy references.

I felt equally neutral about both of them. I feel like the Star Wars story was pretty thin to begin with, and it's just getting thinner as it goes along. Rouge One was barely about anything IMO, but it was no worse than the Force Awakens because that is when they killed the only character in the franchise who actually made it worth watching.

My apologies to fans for my rant, lol. Just being honest. ;)

Haha I totally agree, it was a very weak story to base a 2+hr movie on. They did really well with what little they had though, I guess.

Han was the best character, but Rey is badass and will fill his shoes.

Lol, that is true they did a lot with almost nothing I guess. I do admit that Rogue One killed with the whole retro/original look and feel of the original movies. The Force Awakens did pretty well with that too, but this newest one really kicked some ass as far as that goes. All the machines, movie sets, and especially the costumes, were so true to the "real" Star Wars without looking hokey, so I did enjoy that part at least.

I was aware of the general story of Rogue One. Thanks for the advice all the same, I saw it and enjoyed it quite a bit more than FA.

My main gripe...where were all the Bothans that died to bring us these plans? I didn't see any in the entire movie.
