Remains one of my favorites off that last SG album. I know they were recording some new stuff before Cornell passed, maybe it’ll be released someday...Worcester1 13, Worcester2 13, Hartford 13, San Diego 13, Los Angeles1 13, Los Angeles2 13

I had no idea there was a 'thing' with Phish fans and Twiddle. They are such different bands. They're both jam bands, but total different vibe from each. Phish's songs are not deep, largely, just take an idea and build a jam around it. Twiddle, Mikhail has been through some rough shit and a lot of their songs are about overcoming difficulties. And I love their sound. I'll never understand why fans of a band have to hate on another band. Like who you want and ignore the rest. Phish Phans are supposed to be all hippie peace, man! lol

It’s important to have your own sound though. I saw Umphrey’s a couple years ago and thought they were unique. Saw Spafford last year and thought they were pretty good but sounded Phishy in spots. I guess if you’re a jam band coming up these days, it’s hard not to be influenced by some aspect of Phish.
“Phish songs are not deep, largely”
That’s definitely debatable, and I can’t stand debating lol. Is there a greater drain lol? Sure there’s a bunch of silly, playful lyrics in the songs. But what constitutes deep? Are Pearl Jam songs deep? When somebody writes a new song that gets you out of a hole right at the moment in time you needed it, is that deep? When somebody writes a song that sums up the existence of our time, but in an easily digestible way, is that deep?
For person x over in this corner, their rabbit hole might only go down to a depth of 8 feet in a swimming pool. They’ve never seen the ocean. For person y over in that corner, their rabbit hole might be the abyss of the Mariana Trench. So it’s all subjective really for everybody. I’m drawn to the light, playful aspect of Phish. But also the depth they bring to it all. They’re well balanced. I think Trey’s songs are pretty deep, they just translate in a different way maybe.
Take this version of “Set Your Soul Free” for instance. Sure the lyrics are kind of cheesy although a good, positive message. I can dig it. Then you’ve got an “I’m a Man” tease in there, and by 21:45 they’ve basically ascended into Mad Season’s “November Hotel”. They might as well be reincarnating the soul of Layne Staley by the end of this jam lol. And Trey was at MSG 2016 for PJ, so he’s definitely a fan. I’ve heard them tease “Corduroy” before.

I agree that Trey is on a completely different level and I almost added that. He started his solo career, I believe, because he wanted to go in a different direction than the band. He didn't feel the band was taking music seriously enough, at that point, and he had things he wanted to play and say. I love the new Trey album and I also like his other solo music, more than Phish's music. And he can play that damn guitar and sing and write - talented guy.
I don't mean that their music isn't deep or moving or that they aren't great musicians - I meant that a lot of their songs, while extremely entertaining, are kinda tongue in cheek. Doesn't make the sound, and especially the live version jam not great. I was just comparing the song content of the two bands. Phish obviously has a much deeper catalogue, and Twiddle will jam out longer when it's not the 'album version'. It's not putting down Phish, but the songs are not based around deep subjects in most instances, there are outliers. I love Heavy Things, and it can be taken as a person moving around to avoid being crushed, or it can be taken as a person constantly being hit with heavy shit. I get that.
Actually, and I just thought of this so I'm adding, Twiddle, while very instrumental, is heavily lyric based. I like that. Phish is more instrumental and less lyrically based (meaning the abundance of lyrics within a song). That was my 'deep' meaning.
Again, that OP needs to lay off the psychedelics for a little while. Or maybe after the tour they could dry out for awhile. (insert laughing emoticon that has been eliminated by the great Gaia).
I also like Umphrey's, don't know them that well but like what I've heard and I like everything I've heard from Spafford. Never seen either live.
Now someone needs to post a song!!!Post edited by njnancy on0
