The 2008 Tour: Building the ultimate compilation

edited July 2008 in Given To Fly (live)
So I have the urge to build a compilation of the best performances of each song (and in some cases ONLY song) and make my own mini-boxset bootleg celebrating probably the best tour they've had in a decade.

I suppose the only real way would be to start threads with a "Best version of Small Town" etc. (and yes, Even Flow too -the best solo wins!- ) also "Best version of Alive" poll, of course accounting for Mamasan continuity. Stuff like that. 'Smile', 'Satan's Bed', 'Guaranteed', 'Black Diamond' = all the one off's are, well... guaranteed. :D

So i'm creating this thread to see if anyone would like to chip in, i'll probably be purchasing every show, if I have to. I'm gonna build it in chronological order from WPB to Beacon (or Mansfield II, if not available - let's make some torrents happen, people!!)

Any suggestions are welcome, especially if you were party to different versions of each song. Figure i'll try to build each volume to disc length, approx. 80 mins. each, and burn from FLAC using Nero, but i'm also open to suggestions on that front too.

Post about whichever show you wish, but i'll start with the black sheep of the tour, the rough draft if you will. I have'nt heard it yet, but just from looking at the set list, these are some early contenders:

06-11-08 West Palm Beach, FL

Oceans*
Faithfull
Unemployable
Dissident
Who You Are
Low Light
Gone
Glorified G
Do The Evolution
Inside Job
Comatose
Rearviewmirror
It Rains On Me*

* = WPB exclusive

So... thoughts?

I will keep a copy of the Tampa show separate, having been there & loving every second of it, but in the interest of building said box set, if I had to choose the highlights for vol.2, it would be these:

    06-12-08 Tampa, FL

    Sometimes*
    Corduroy
    Severed Hand
    Marker In The Sand
    Light Years
    Down
    Wishlist
    Given To Fly
    Present Tense
    Insignificance
    Do The Evolution
    Nothingman*
    Black
    Porch
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away*

    * = Tampa exclusive

It gets trickier, because alot of these were highlights at Roo, MSG & Hartford, so here's where the "best versions" really start to factor in.

    EV - 08/04 & 08/05/08: (Eddie solo, w/Liam Finn) NYC I & II, 11/27 & 11/28/12: (Eddie solo, w/Glen Hansard) Orlando I & II, 02/09 & 02/10/22: (Eddie & the Earthlings) Chicago I & II, 09/30/23: (Eddie & the Earthlings) Ohana Festival

Was it extended? Also did it have Stone or Matt doing the "once you, once you" part ?

'All Night', 'Education,' and 'W.M.A.' from Columbia were VERY sweet, in my in-person opinion, not to mention 'Can't Keep' and 'Sad.'

I'm going to keep a close eye on this thread, as I think its a great idea and will likely throw the chosen performances into a playlist myself. Thanks for thinking of it!

Breakerfall & Smile are locks, pretty sure Not For You & In Hiding are locks too, but I need feedback on Immortality.

I concur 100%, but then again, Hartford was the best show ;)

Breakerfall & Smile are locks, pretty sure Not For You & In Hiding are locks too, but I need feedback on Immortality.
immortality had the little tag at the beginning. it was awesome. defintetly should be taken into consideration.

Release from Bonnaroo for sure, was very emotional and heartfelt.

I think their's gonna be a knockdown drag-out fight between the Roo goers & the MSG goers over that one.

I want to say Roo, but I have'nt heard MSG yet.

    Anybody go to both?

More like a box set worth of albums :P

It's either gonna be chronological, with the best versions appearing in order of what show they were played, next to the one-off's n' such

    or

A mix of the best versions & the one-off's pretty much set to shuffle, with 'Sometimes' from Tampa as the opener and 'Yellow Ledbetter/Little Wing' from Hartford as the closer.

    MSG I

    Watchtower

    MSG II

Evenflow (Matt Cameron solo is incredible)
    Betterman

Yes, I was at Mansfield I. While the roar of the crowd after the second verse was monumental. The entire version, particularly the save it for later tag was maybe the best I've ever heard.

    Hartford (so many)

    In Hiding
    Immortality
    Breakerfall
    (I could go on)

    Mansfield II

    Footsteps
    RITFW

Garden from MSG 2 was the best of the 3 times performed this tour by far.

Also don't forget Black Diamond w/ Ace!
