Need some feedback. My buddy insists if you go analog with vinyl you should get a tube amp. I can buy this direct from China for $567. It is highly rated on Amazon. I would use it strictly for vinyl. Anyone have one or play vinyl with a vacuum tube amp? I don't want to pay $3,000-$5000 for hi fi Mcintosh vacuum tube amp. Thoughts? Does sound justify over a regular amp with Wi Fi and all the other current bells and whistles?

  • You can also get tube preamps that can give you the warmth of sound you may be looking for at a better budget.

Thank you. I will look into that. Then the signal can be processed by any receiver.

  • yeah, it's the same concept guitar and most bass amps take when they use the preamp to color/warm the sound, while the amp just pushes extra wattage. since switching to vinyl fairly recently i use a cambridge phono preamp to connect my old turntable into my current system that is made for both surround and music listening as I have multiple settings and it sounds phenomenal. Especially when compared to the digital world, when I'm rich I'll upgrade everything for now but you will notice things you never have before just by switching to vinyl in the first place

tube is the only way to listen to vinyl in my opinion. and yes there are some less expensive options out there.

The Cambridge preamp option looks great, but my receiver cuts out the right channel at times, so buying a preamp and new receiver is close in cost to a Yaqin Vacuum Tube amp. I'm new to this, but switching to an Orange guitar tube amp made me wanna see what a tube amp can do with vinyl. Would the Cambridge preamp into a tube receiver be redundant?
    Thanks for the replies.

  • It's needed to change the phono signal into a line level signal to plug into a regular amp, still giving u the warmth and a clear signal that has worked great for me in the mean time. If you can swing it and think u may have problems in ur receiver that could be a problem depending on the input u use. Just think of it as a chain. The weakest link will be the problem whether it be amp, speakers, turntables, etc, and even the quality of cables. So, it totally depends on your budget and long term usage.
