Any insights on Oahu?

I'm visiting Oahu in November and staying on the Marine base. I am really looking forward to kayaking in Kailua. I see the Jelly boxfish warnings are on the calendar for 5 out of the 7 days I''m there. Am I totally screwed for swimming that whole time?
I can do without Honolulu except for maybe hitting up Chinatown. Unless there is something I shouldn't miss. I'm more interested in snorkeling, kayaking and hiking :-)
