Just did my first one.. The framing store was way too expensive so I decided to do it myself.
First one cost me around 70$US, and with the leftover materials, next one should be half price or so.
anyone of you built their own framing as well ?

  • Great job! I've never done the frame itself but have used americanframe.com which is kind of do it yourself and less expensive than going to Michaels or another framer. Currently working on my Thomas Fenway. Check out this thread too

Interested in the DIY through that website. Any advice or pointers on using them to order the materials needed?

  • That came out excellent! I've been tossing around the idea of framing a poster on my own also. Paying framing prices is getting old.

I've used them twice only so far. The first project turned out great (EV Tulsa 2012). I'm learning as I go. I'm currently waiting for the supplies to arrive for my Fenway poster. The process is really easy on their website. Their customer service is decent too so if you are unsure of measurements etc they can walk you through it a bit. You can upload a pic of the poster and get a feel for how it will look with different matte colors and frames. It guides you through how to measure but definitely measure at least twice. Example.... The Thomas Fenway print has a white border that I didn't want to see bc the image of the poster runs off the edge. I wanted my matte to come right up to the image and eliminate that border. I ordered the samples of the mattes I chose before placing the final order (samples are free) to be sure the colors were right bc I was nervous about matching up exactly on the computer screen. I recall the process of putting the whole thing together to be easy too so hopefully it will be the same with the Fenway. I paid $110 shipped. It has archival glass and backing (uv and antiglare) and a double matte. 2 inch wide, wooden frame. The same project with similar frame would have been more than double at Michaels even with the current sale and discount. Also Michaels didn't have a frame I liked as much anyway. I'll post pics when it's done.

I let Hobby Lobby do all of my custom framing jobs. For the posters that have generic sizes, I frame those myself.

I love American Frame. Used them for 15 posters and haven't had a problem yet.

Someone talk to me about framing themselves for generic sizes, not using American Frame. If I have an 18 x 24, what size frame do I need and where can I get one reasonably cheap? Do you matte it yourself too?

Try to find a 20 x 26 frame or 22x28 frame with an included mat.

Hobby Lobby has 40% off coupons online that you can use in store. That's the main reason I use them. They have all the sizes and are very helpful if you have any questions.
