I cant think of a better source of support for why we the fans would LOVE the bootlegs for the solo shows!! This is from a Rolling Stone article 2 years ago. :)

You bootlegged concerts growing up. Still have the tapes?

I've still got them. I listened to them a lot. In a way, music for me was fucking heroin. It was something I needed. And to see a live show was something I needed, it gave me strength through adolescence and through this young adult life -- to feel like there was a purpose to get through this whole thing. After a live show, the high could wear off in a day or two. The bootleg recordings and listening back at them with your eyes closed and headphones seemed to make a crappy recording actually sound pretty good. It was like getting high again. I was a user.

Was there one you played a lot?

An earlier X show I listened to an infinite number of times. The early Who shows, at Golden Hall. The Pretenders. Bands like the Tubes. I'd record everybody but there are certainly ones that lasted forever.

Where'd you position the recorder?

It depends what kind of machine. A lot of them were early Walkmans. I had a CostClub-ten-percent deal. This was when they first came out, the first stereo recorders, so they were rather cumbersome compared to a whatchamacallit -- an iPod. You'd have to hold the whole cassette player up, but 4 or 5 years later you could plug a mic in and sneak it on your lapel. For every good bootleg I got, I probably got caught half the other times, because I was usually close to the stage. That's why I just wanted people to record a show and not be hassled by The Man.

So you got kicked out?

They'd take my recorder and rough me up. A lot of times, they'd take the tapes, which is a little nicer. Some guys were overly aggressive. I never once sold a tape. On very few occasions, if someone was very into it, I'd make them a copy.

  • This is why I have a feeling a 'Best Of' two disc set will be officially released, with Disc 1 being the west, and Disc 2 being the East.

With Eddie's known bootlegging growing up, and with him for sure being the catalyst for the whole PJ bootleg program, it doesnt make sense why he would be so strict about it.

Other then having these being released in some form.

EVERYONE wants to get their hands on at least one of the shows...it only make sense to do a 'Live on Two Legs' type thing.

has ed said that he recorded an artist who specifically asked that their shows not be taped?
  • who knows what his collection holds

Interesting question, espescially since he was quoted saying

"That's why I just wanted people to record a show and not be hassled by The Man."

But i also agree with what was said before. There's bound to be some sort of release for the two legs of his solo tour. The only downside to that is there are unique memories from the original shows that we were actually at that i want to playback in my head. I want the whole show from NYC I.

But beggars cant be choosers! I'd be more than happy with a best of version.

Although this isn't Eddie, at least it looks like things were being recorded. Here is the link as well as the blurb about how Liam is releasing live at the Wiltern. Also if you haven't caught the Eddie tour but want to see what everyone is talking about with Liam Finn try to catch one of his 28 dates when he tours the US.

This August, Finn will also release Live at the Wiltern EP, recorded during Finn’s tour dates with Eddie Vedder on the West Coast, and only available at your local independent music seller.

Ed's a hypocrite. Luckily he doesn't set PJ policy. But he controls his shows and when recordings surface he set 10C loose on them to take them down.

It would be nice to understand why, but they prefer to threaten rather than explain.

In many of his pro-bootlegging spiels years ago, Ed said some moments are probably better in your head, and hearing a bootleg later on would take away the specialness. I believe he specificially mentioned a club show in London where Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix supposedly jammed together.

And Ed's thought was ... it was probably a magical night if you were there ... but if you listen to a bootleg of that show, it probably sounds like two incoherent drunk dudes in the basement of a frat house or something.

Some things just aren't meant to be recorded for posterity. Maybe Ed's solo shows fall into that category.

Luckily we have Ed to make that decision for us.

As a counter to Ed's sentiments above, there are many memories I've recalled only after listening to bootlegs. And even more bootlegs I've listened to for shows I wasn't able to attend, and therefore didn't have memories of. Recordings of shows are a wonderful thing.

  • I agree with Jeffbr...Ed's a bit of a hypocrite. But, in his defense, everyone has a right to change their mind.

All of us know well why we cherish all our bootlegs. Ed hasn't forgotten this so his policy really puzzles me...especially to the point where the dogs get called out and the riot gear goes on. Ed is a music lover.

Also, about the comment about, suppose the show is bad...to that I would say let the fan decide...I heard that recent Zep reunion show and I didn't think it was that fantastic, but it still gave me the goosebumps.

Maybe EV will release alla the bootlegs...at least that is all that I'm holding onto for now.

It's a damn shame these shows aren't readily available.

I feel like we are being punished somehow. Weird shit.
