i wonder if Jill Stein or anyone else who considers Assange a hero realizes he is an accused rapist who is holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy to escape facing charges. Kind of disturbing a female candidate for President (or anyone else) would consider this guy a hero.

Never heard that. Maybe some solid links please?

I heard about it on This Week with John Oliver. Can't find a copy of that on YouTube at the moment. below are two stories i found.

Did you read the article? Here is an excerpt - Many have asked how Greens, who count feminism among our ten key values, can support Assange when he’s been accused of rape. As a strong advocate for victims of sexual violence, I take this question seriously.
While countless media reports highlight the allegations against Assange, most people have never heard that an official UN report has declared the case against Assange to be unfounded. Three investigations have been dropped without charges ever having been filed. And the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has stated that Assange has been unlawfully detained and should be released. In light of these facts, it appears the allegations against Assange were a false pretext used by those who want to give him the Chelsea Manning treatment — or worse.

he is an accused rapist who has been hiding out in a foreign embassy to escape the charges. does that sound like an innocent man to you? his defenders say he is hiding out because he fears extradition from Sweden to the US but US Justice Department has said it has no justification for charging him. From the article i posted: "But his supporters fear that he could be "snatched" by the CIA and spirited away to the US, regardless of the extradition treaty. There are no charges against him in the US, although he fears he could be put on trial for espionage. Yet The Washington Post reported in 2013 that the Justice Department had concluded there was no way it could prosecute him."
sorry again i find it hard to believe that a woman running for President would openly support an accused rapist. but hey 'they take the question seriously" so for some i guess that's good enough.
pjhawks, he's not an "accused rapist". He is accused of rape. The former essentially calls him a rapist. Neither you nor I know the actual evidence for or against those claims. I'm not defending Assange per se, just the idea that because he is not returning to Europe to answer those charges it means he is guilty. There is an sure an awful lot of other mess swirling around him to assume that is the reason he's not leaving the embassy. He would not be the only foreign national your country has held despite not having strong grounds to prosecute.

sure but not knowing the circumstances wouldn't it give you pause to say you support this man knowing he might be guilty of rape? that was the point of my 1st post. A woman running for President of the United States said he was a hero. i have a hard time calling someone accused of rape a hero until i know a lot more of the facts.

The creation and administration of Wikileaks is absolutely a brave and heroic venture, regardless of Assange's other actions. Does that make him a hero, or does that mean that he has acted heroically? I'm not sure it matters.

It would give me personally pause, sure, but I haven't researched the issue enough to know what investigation has been done and whether these charges have indeed been debunked. Maybe she has. In any case I don't view him as a hero.

The Swedish authorities feel strongly enough that he should be remanded to Sweden to stand trial on the charges, so much so that they have made a formal request of Ecuador to hand him over as their statue of limitations expires next year. If a formal body such as the Swedish prosecutors office believes there is sufficient evidence to formally charge him and put him on trial, then I say he should face the charges. If he can't get a fair trial in Sweden, then we're all doomed. His wikileaks involvement is a whole different matter in that he's basically releasing someone else's stolen information. Next time it could be yours.
