The Pearl Jam Community Top 250 Songs Of The 70'S

g under pg under p Posts: 18,196
I got this idea looking up a song I liked from the 70's. I thought this might be challenging in that most here might not know too many songs from that inventive beginning of several music genres.

1) One song per post.

2) A PJC member can only post an album every 10 picks (or every 5 if it grows stagnant)

3) Please cut and paste as you post

4) Please give a brief reason beneath your pick as to why you're choosing that particular song. That way it'll be a little more than just a huge list thread, I know y'all know I can be very talkative when it comes to music.

For me I'll start with this song.....

    1. BENNIE AND THE JETS.......Elton John

I was in junior high school trying to learn how to play the piano. That song came out live from what I remember and I loved EJ's playing on the ivory. I can clearly recall walking to school in the cold Boston winters singing, screaming Bennie, Bennie, Bennie and the Jets.

    http://youtu.be/_MQuHRCSQzQ

Some facts about the song....After recording the song in the studio, John and the band worried that it was too plain and unoriginal. In the Eagle Vision documentary on the making of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John recalled, "I fought tooth and nail against 'Bennie' coming out as a single." According to guitarist Davey Johnstone, "'Bennie and the Jets' was one of the oddest songs we ever recorded. We just sat back and said, 'This is really odd.'" While mixing the album, Dudgeon came up with the idea of creating a "live from Playhouse Theatre" sound for the track. He added reverb effects, applause and other audience sounds from John's previous concerts and a loop from the Jimi Hendrix live album Isle of Wight, plus whistles, giving it the "live concert recording" feel that has since become a sort of trademark.

This song was released in 1973, before I was born. I first heard it on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. It is one of my top 70 ' s songs. The horns are fantastic!
2.Jungle Boogie- Kool & The Gang

Unfortunately, my parents didn't see fit to school me in the art of funk, I consider it one of the great tragedies of my childhood. I could've been listening to 'Get Down on it' instead of 'The Wheels on the Bus'. Thank god for Quentin Tarantino.

    "Highway Star" by Deep Purple

Because before this, there had never been a serious of beats, chords, notes and words that captured pure stoke! And I would argue that there hasn't been since.

While I was looking up that 70's song by Sly Stone on YouTube on the side was the videos The Story of Funk. I clicked on it and watched the whole hour or so of it and in it was that song by Kool And The Gang. Great video on the history of funk and its many influences, many featured on Soul Train. BTW, Elton John and David Bowie were two of the few white artists featured on the show. Also, loved that Deep Purple song first time hearing it.

The metal thread was fun. I think this will be good fun as well. Aerosmith was the first band I saw live, in 1978 at the Seattle Center Coliseum. So I'll start with Aerosmith - Dream On.

Great thread!!! I love 70's music, so many childhood memories when I hear them. I could name 250 myself.

My first one will be Brand New Key by Melanie just because it's a really happy song and great to sing along to.

Riff Raff by AC/DC - I actually only heard this song for the first time a few weeks ago while listening to Powerage on Spotify but have re-played it countless times since then. A powerful yet funky main riff and some awesome lead work have almost made it my favourite song of theirs.

Someone beat me to Aerosmith, so I will leave my love of Toys In The Attic for another time.

Being a metal lover, the next easy spot was War Pigs.

     1. Bennie And The Jets - Elton John (g under p)
    2. Jungle Boogie - Kool & The Gang (offshegoes35)

    8. One Of These Things First -Nick Drake (offshegoes35)
    9.  War Pigs - Black Sabbath (F Me In The Brain)

Paranoid was my favorite album for many years and helped form my love of music.
War Pigs was my favorite song on that album, and I remember my mother being horrified as I sang a song as a youngster with the word 'Satan' in it.
Ozzy went solo and he became one of my favorites...when I first saw him in concert the part where I most lost my mind was his rendition of War Pigs
The video montage he had going behind him while he sang was amazing.  Hearing the drums and that air raid siren....it made every hair on my body stand up straight.

An updated memory was attending TOTD in Philly last year...a number of my friends from these boards joined me pre/post for partying and one great couple provided amazing tickets and VIP access before the show.  When this started up....again, I lost my motherfucking mind.  Jumped around like a crazy person.

I know it is sort of blasphemy to not list a 70s era performance...but in light of Chris' passing and how much hearing the song meant to me on that particular night....this is my version to put up here:

Edit:  fuck, that was tough to watch.  Ripped a scab off!  (Gotta love music, though.  'Show Me How To Live')

One of the most memorable guitar riffs of all time. Perhaps American Woman is more widely accepted as the definitive The Guess Who song, but that riff along with much deeper lyrics along with the outro jam to No Time has always stood out to me more.

D'oh! I screwed up royally. I didn't notice the 70's in the thread title and picked a song from 1969.  :s I'll amend it to "When The Levee Breaks". Sorry again!

So many to choose from! And someone remembered the Guess Who! Woot! Music got me through my childhood (and adolescence, and....). I'll have to come back here often to add my other favorites. ;-)
I've literally been a fan of David Bowie for as long as I can remember. While my absolute favorite Bowie song is "Beauty and the Beast," here I will list the song that was my favorite IN the 1970's: "Changes." Why? Gosh, I don't know -- it seems kind of obvious to me. It gave me hope.

Also, true story: preschool me was a big fan of Cher. :-)

This song came up on Spotify on my long drive from South Florida to MD. Back in the day I still remember mixing the opening at least three times b4 letting it play. It became a major hit back then and is still played at many old school parties today.

I first heard this song at my first house party (1977) which was a big hit here in the DC Metro area. Loved the the song and its extended 14 minute version, I've followed the band ever since.

Cutz that choice is a classic. I can recall mixing that at dorm and student union parties and here's another classic in the funk genre from kings of funk...

    PARLIAMENT-FUNKADELIC.....
(Not Just) KNEE DEEP extended version 19 minutes

I could play this and I could get out on the floor and jam with the crowd. That guitar solo at the 9 minute mark is classically one of the best eva. Gary Shyder and Mike Hampton on guitar were the best 👌 on those solos.1979

    ✌️
