I would plan for at least 5 hours, and 3 searches! At least that is what happened to me!

If you are coming from 40, hop on 111 to 70 to 55. You might think interstate is quicker but it's not. You can drive on the back road and wave at all of the hillbillys as they sit on their front lawn and wave at you. Often time traffic is so slow that people get out and have a little party on the side of the road. The first year I saw a couple of people wheeling a smokey joe and cooking burgers on the side of the road.

Once you get to the entrance "Bushy Branch Rd", you still have about 2 hours so be prepared for that. Bring music and just enjoy the excitement of 70,000 people around you.

When we got there near opening time on Thursday in '05 we got in there in less than 1 hour. Every other time has been about 4-8 hours.

Do they do searches on the people in the car too? Or just the car?

Every Bonnaroo I've been to has been worth it. Having Pearl Jam there makes it even more so.

We were only searched one year and that was just opening up the cooler. Put your glass beer bottles on the bottom or just bring cans. They have cans of Heineken and New Castle.

I'v never heard of them searching a person. It is a free-for-all there. Don't worry about a thing.

They're not allowed to search your car unless you let them.

they will search your car for obvious things like nitrous tanks and glass bottles

they will not search your person

The first three years I went it was hell getting in on Friday morning (4-6 hours). Last year I went right in with NO line. I always take Rt. 55 down from McMinnville. Each year it has been at 9am when I get in line. Leaving was never a problem until last year when there was a huge traffic jam (2 hrs.) after The White Stripes finished on Sunday evening. All they look for in the search is glass bottles.

get there as early as possible. we normally arrive around 5 or 6 am; of course, you have to wait for the gates to open but after that, it only takes 3 hours to get in.
not bad when you consider some people wait 12-16 hours.
