Is America's interventionist approach necessary to stop Russian intervention?

I'm curious to hear people's opinions on this. My cousin subscribes to the "interventionism by necessity" handbook when it comes to America's foreign affairs (specifically with their militaristic intervention). On the topics of America's role in shaping the South American countries, as well as shaping the countries in the Middle East, his opinion always comes back to "if we didn't do it, Russia would've intervened - so we prevented Russian infiltration". Do you on here think this is a valid statement, and would Russian infiltration be something to fear right now?
