so in their four stints, it's averages about eight repeats, not terrible.

I would say 2010 shows were kind of supporting-promoting Backspacer. So songs from the supporting album, should not even be counted as repeats. The both shows will be Backspacer heavy, it is unavoidable.

With this point above, one can conclude that the percent of repeats has risen in 2016, compared to 2010.

so the final tally for the most to least diverse msg setlist are:

5/20/10 and 5/21/10 (in support of Backspacer)
67 songs total 60 different songs

7/8/03 and 7/9/03 (in support of Riot Act)
60 original songs. 54 different songs

5/1/16 and 5/2/16 (no supporting album)
64 songs total 53 different songs

6/24/08 msg and 6/25/08 (no supporting album)
59 total songs. 50 different songs total.

9/10/98 and 9/11/98: (in support of Yield)
49 songs total 36 different songs

Another issue being discussed is Ten-heaviness.

In 2016, both shows featured 7 songs from Ten, each. That corresponds to 14/64 = 22% of total played songs.

In 2010, total 8 songs from Ten were played out of total 67, which is 12%.

So, we had a substantial increase in songs played from Ten in 2016 MSG shows, which accidentally came just after a show where album Ten was played in its entirety.
What's your part, who you are?

    2012: Arras, Berlin 1-2
    2013: Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires
    2014: Milano, Trieste, Vienna, Berlin
    2016: NY MSG 1

Thank you. No complaining, I would still be happy and rocking out, even if they played the same 5 songs over and over at a show.

But from a setlist-writing standpoint, apparently this year in msg, we did not get the diversity of 2010 shows

I agree songs from the current album shouldn't count at least not as strong.
But then the same argument applies to Lightning bold.
So Mind your manners and Lightning bold shouldn't count as repeats either, slightly lowering the percentage of repeats for 2016.

I would say, it is bit of a stretch to count this year shows as supporting Lightning Bold, it has been 3 years already and the band has done a few rounds of tours in US before. I would assume, just like mcgruff, this year's shows do not specifically support any album.

It's hard to compare 2016 to 1998. They had 6 less albums, including Lost Dogs, to pull songs from.
    Pittsburgh 1998 • Pittsburgh 2006 • 2012 Isle Of Wight Festival • 2012 Made In America Festival • Baltimore 2013 • Seattle 2013

Well the fact that there is no Lightning bolt art work on the boot would suggest that you are right. But Lightning bolt is still the current album. For instance Pearl Jam still played more Backspacer songs in 2012 than they do now.

Apart from the numbers MSG seems less special because of the choices made for the songs coming from Vs. and Vitalogy. Had they picked Satan's bed or Tremor Christ from Vitalogy or Glorified G. and W.M.A. from Vs. than that would have shifted the balance some what.

I posted this in another thread (was at all 10):
Night 2 98 (front row between stone and ed)
    Night 2 10
    Night 1 03
Night 1 16 (best first set I've ever seen)
    Night 1 98
    Night 1 10
    Night 2 03
08 shows and msg 2, 16 are the bottom three.

for some reason the 08 shows and msg 2,16 weren't that good imo.

I wasn't at either, but if I had to guess 2003 night 1 was such a monster that night 2 could never match it.

Well, you could say the band has compensated for that by playing so tight. I don't know the second night (damn), but first night, the thought in my mind was: I cannot believe how good they sound. I am looking forward to the boot to relive it all again.

I always felt Night 2 had a great first set, by itself in a vacuum, but night 1's encore sets were just untoppable. Also, opening night 2 with Crazy Mary felt a little "off."

Well that seems a like good answer, but that only sets it apart from the first night from 2003.
But hey like you I wasn't there ( too bad :-( ), and so I'm just judging the bootlegs. I get the feeling the second night in 2003 for some reason is much more intimate than the first one. Perhaps it's only because the campfire start with Crazy Mary. :-D
Still I was curious to hear from someone who was acually there.
The bootleg of the first night in 2010 never quite grew on me, which has mostly to do with soundquality. I knew the mix on the 2008 bootlegs leaves something to be desired, but still I prefer it to the recording of the first night in 2010.

I've always said that if you took the main set of Night 2 2003 with the encores of Night 1 2003, you'd have pretty much the perfect PJ show, aside from the Crazy Mary opener

9/11/98 is still the best PJ show of all time. Not one bad tune. Great crowd. Etc. no one can touch that setlist. Theyre still my favorite band but the inclusion of later albums today makes it tough to have A+ setlists.
