Timothy "Skully" Quinlan
Timothy James "Skully" Quinlan died unexpectedly on Friday, April 8, 2016, 12 days shy of his 52nd birthday.
Tim lived a magical life. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he saw more of the world before getting his driver's license than most people see in a lifetime: living in Brussels, London, Chicago, Manila and Paris, eventually settling in Raleigh in 1981.
Upon graduating from Ravenscroft School, Tim entered East Carolina University. His love for music found its first venue there hosting a reggae music program at the school's radio station, WZMB, as DJ "Skully". That nickname would follow him throughout his career.
Following his passion, Tim began his professional career touring with the seminal Raleigh band The Woods. For the next 30 years he worked with bands as diverse as Pearl Jam, Hootie and the Blowfish, metal legend Glenn Danzig and country crossover Darius Rucker.
Tim's work took him across the nation and around the globe many times. A local man in the legendary world of music, Tim was a true professional; madly respected among his peers and colleagues. Bonds made among musicians on the road endure like family. They say he never met a stranger, or made an enemy.
Sixteen years ago, on his birthday during a rare trip home, Tim met his future wife, Debra Shore, at The Lakeside Lounge in downtown Raleigh. Tim brought up his love of fishing; Debra proudly let him know she could throw a cast net. He was hooked from that moment on.
Tim was a family man at heart. When his daughter Adah Pearl was born in 2009, he found roots and gave up life on the road. He transitioned to concert stage management in 2010 with Live Nation, working up to the position of Production Manager for Raleigh's Walnut Creek and Red Hat Amphitheater, as well as Live Nation's other venues throughout North and South Carolina. Tim and Debra had a second child in 2012, Oliver, who cemented the bond linking his two families — the stars of the music world and the stars of his home life. Raising his "families" became his life.
The families have set up a trust for Tim and Debra's children in order to support their transition through this very difficult time and invite any others who wish to contribute to join them by making a donation to the "Tim Quinlan Family Trust" c/o Foy Beal, Beal & Haney, PLLC, CPAs, 107 Windel Dr, Suite 107, Raleigh, NC 27609 or via PayPal timquinlanfamilytrust@gmail.com
