It Happened Today-R.E.M.

the walk on music was REM last night and it really stuck with me (excitement of the moment definitely helped). to be honest i've never really given them a chance. what's their best stuff?

You really can't go wrong. Their entire catalog is really strong. Records 1-10 with Bill Berryare all very, very good imo. I enjoy the post Berry stuff too, although it pales in comparison. Just a phenomenal band.

If I had to rank their studio albums, it would probably look something like this:

Automatic for the People (top 10 album for me)
New Adventures in Hi Fi (strong from beginning to end)
Life's Rich Pageant (opening 3 tunes are so good)
Out of Time (probably the poppiest record)
Monster (crunchy guitars, as close to grunge type sound)
Document (several high points, not quite that consistent)
    Reckoning
    Murmur
    Green
    Fables of The Reconstruction
Accelerate (probably the 1 newer record that comes close to the classic lineup)
    Up
Collapse Into Now (Vedder sings background on It Happened Today)
    Reveal
    Around the Sun
    8/16/92
    9/24/96, 9/28/96
    8/25/98, 9/18/98
    9/5/00
    4/26/03
    6/23/06
    10/28/09
    10/11/13, 10/12/13
    10/1/14
    9/2/18, 9/4/18
    9/18/21

I put this song on this morning and got chills. Now I will associate it with the awesome moment that is the beginning of a Pearl Jam concert!
words seem so out of place.

REM was such a great band. Remember seeing them in 1987 or 88 at Rutgers.

Check out Calgary 2011. It was the day REM announced they were retiring, and Ed covered it acoustic. I remember it being pretty poignant.

REM's Monster is my favorite of theirs. Let Me In is my favorite REM song of all time. Fantastic lyrics and awesome guitar sounds throughout.

I'll never forget REM's "Leave" being played as part of the pre-show "mixtape" before the Toronto show in 2003.

all the above REM is awesome. Michael Stipe's voice and lyrics are second to none. I love it all but would look at these individual tracks:

    night swimming (automatic)
    country feedback (out of time)
    find the river (automatic)
half a world away (out of time)
Let me in & what's the frequency (Monster)
Electrolite & ebow the letter (new adventures)
    Unafraid & daysleeper (UP)
    finest work song (document)
world leader and turn you inside out (green)
talk about the passion and perfect circle (murmur)

there is a ton more... great catalog to explore. enjoy!
IF NOTHING IS EVERYTHING, I'LL HAVE IT ALL.
