Though we didn't all work the rules (1 pre show + 10 song main set + a 5 song encore? What is that, a 45-minute long show?), I nominated Beer Baron's setlist. He not only implanted the holy S-O-S trinity for me ("State of Love and Trust", "Oceans", and "Sometimes" in the same show), he also added "Immortality", my fourth favorite PJ track of all time. Only one show in the history of PJ's career has (or likely ever will) contained all four of those songs.
Then he goes even further and adds "Breath", the original 'man' trilogy (including the two tags for "Betterman" that made it even more incredible than it already was, as if the band improved upon in years after its release), and a slew of songs that are a PJ fan's wet dream:
"Red Mosquito"
"Black, Red, Yellow"
"Crown of Thorns"
"Fatal"...
I don't care much for "Deep" or "Breakerfall" but I think they work great when coupled with other songs: "Deep"/"Breath" is an amazing combo, as is "Breakerfall"/"Corduroy"... I hate to admit it, but as great as "Instellar Overdrive" is for a lead in, "Breakerfall" works almost as well, if not better... I love PF but some Pearl Jam songs just gel well together.
Beer Baron also listed my #5: "All Those Yesterdays". That song is the PJ's counterpart equivalent of "Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place)" from Talking Head's 'Speaking in Tongues' LP. It's beautiful and it's quirky and for a band with such a great sense of humor and delivery I can't fathom why they don't play it... at all anymore.
So many die-hard fans go from show to show and wait with bated breath just to possibly hear it played, I hear reports of it getting worked out in soundchecks and many, many fans are disappointed when it is never played in the sets or encores. The song COULD have been a college radio sweetheart in its day... Why can't they just open with it one time and see what kind of crowd reaction they get?
"Sometimes" is my favorite song (it's short it enough and structured more as incidental music than an actual song itself), but I've still got my fingers crossed they play it at Adelaide 2 or Perth this week. I'd humbly settle for "ATY"... possibly.
Sorry if I sound like a complainer... I realize the band has some kind of obligation to play hits like "Even Flow", "Given to Fly", "Alive" and "Do the Evolution" need be played at every show, but even the weaker singles like "Insignificance" and "Save You" and good but not great album cuts like "Corduroy" are also staples; they're played at almost every show.
I realize the band has to play a certain number of these songs they've worked out on stage hundreds of times, and for some reason Ed won't give up "Corduroy" or "Insignificance", but it's setlists like the eclectic recent Newcastle show that give us hanging on hope for more diverse shows.
It would be cool if the band has limited appearances in 2007 or 2008 to work out contests where a lottery is employed to let fans compile setlists for half a dozen shows. It would be pro-active, get the fans more involved in the band as they tour. First off, there would need to be guidelines (a certain sample of each album would need to be represented, a cap on rarities or 'lost dogs', and the band would have veto power or would be able to switch out songs so long as they retained say, 80% of the original finalist's setlist).
What does everyone think of this idea? I realize my 'Twenty-Ten' show would be a little too taxing (we'll talk it over again in 2010), but I could pare down my setlist to 32 songs (sans 3 Encore Breaks), or compile a new one.
I just think it would be a really cool to have a setlist lottery for a few shows, especially if they're fan-club oriented shows in liberal cities that have already proven themselves with good audience feedback. Newcastle could be the beginning of a new, beautiful soldality with the band and its loyal fans.
Got to laugh guys - the whole limit was to try establish a bit of intigue as to wha tyo uREALLY wanted to hear. I love the bloke who went to the trouble and time of designing a 4hr set with order of songs and encore breaks...but its easy to list al ltheir songs!
My original idea spawned fro ma wish to have an intimate show - limited set, lots of red wine and a bit more one on one the nthe shows they do now.
I am enjoying reading the different set lists, seeing what opens, reading what some people feel are 'commercial' tracks, seeing the popular and the left field. Keep it up.
Oh and I have managed to meet Ed too, so maybe I should have told him this idea at the time!

This is like "Desert Island". Pick the 16 Pearl Jam songs you'd live with for all eternity, et cetera. But that's bogus. I know my 15/16 favorite PJ songs, enjoy hearing them but I know just stacking my own subjective sixteen favorite songs together does not a good show make. You have to work it out and build a crafty setlist, one where the songs play off each other, and it doesn't sound like the band came out just to play someone's favorites. Blah.
You're asking us to pick only so few... that's like Sophie's fuckin' Choice, man!!! There ARE too many songs I want to see in a setlist, and there are already a select few I wish they'd play less frequently... 16 songs is just not so easy for me, living in an age when Pearl Jam has moved far away from what would fill a single compact disc for live media. 2-disc and 3-disc sets are the norm now, and the shortest concert this year (excluding BSB) was Bern, only 108 Minutes long. Even their festival shows were longer than poor Bern...

I'm that bloke, yes, erm. Hmm. And I can see a 4-hour setlist happening before Pearl Jam comes to hang out, drink and noodle around on the guitar for a preset, ten songs and five song encore with anyone, unless you're a celebrity or can bankroll a private gig. If I had that kind of money, I'd sooner get myself a Russian Mail-Order-Bride, a mountain of cocaine and a scattergun. And for entertainment, maybe I could secure Spinal Tap.

'Commerical' tracks are anything that got radio airplay anywhere. "Corduroy" isn't a single, but you can still hear it on the radio. "Oceans" was never released as a single in the States, but "Black" garners far more infamy than that song and has perhaps surpassed a couple other the 'Ten' singles. Most notorious Pearl Jam songs? Is it a sin to love them?
Moderation is the key. But the main set should be obscure album cuts and 'Lost Dogs', and the encore should be singles. I'm sure there's some asshole out there that'd prefer to hear the band play "Yellow Ledbetter" 16 times in a row. And they call me crazy.

With all the talk of best concert, best song, favourite lines etc, I got to thinking about coming up with a set list you would love to hear at a PJ concert. There are some rules though, and I know everyone will have a different list, but that is what makes it interesting.
You can have 1 pre-show opener, 10 songs in the main set and 5 songs in the encore.
Mine might be:
Pre: Dead Man Walking
Main: Severed Hand, Corduroy, RVM, Inside Job, Wishlist, Betterman, Daughter (tag: Its Ok), Nothing as it Seems, Go, Even Flow
Encore: Crazy Mary, Do the Evolution, Animal, Porch, RITFW
Pre: Dead Man
1.)Wasted/Life Wasted

10.)Comatose
11.)Corduroy
12.)Not For You
13.)Immortaliy
14.)Black
15.)Baba O'Riley
I don't think it's even possible to think of a list that small for me. If I were in charge of making a "dream list", here it is:
Pre-set: Dead Man
Main: Release, Last Exit, Do The Evolution, Severed Hand, Even Flow, Corduroy, Daughter/(It's OK)/(W.M.A), Grievance, Satan's Bed, Gone, Present Tense, Love Boat Captain, Life Wasted, Sonic Reducer/(I Believe In Miracles), Whipping, Porch, Black/(Modern Girl), Who You Are, Leash

Pearl Jam plays secret show in Hawaii Fri Dec 1, 3:18 PM ET
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Pearl Jam performed a secret show for about 300 people in Hawaii Thursday, two days before it headlines a gig at Honolulu's Blaisdell Center.

The outdoor show at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center was part of the opening festivities for the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational surfing competition.
The 15-song set mixed favorites like "Corduroy," "Even Flow," "Better Man" and "Do the Evolution" with covers of the Who's "Baba O'Riley," the Avengers' "The Amerikan in Me" and Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," which featured a guest turn on guitar by surfer Kelly Slater. Slater, a longtime friend of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, also sung portions of "Indifference."
Earlier in the day, Vedder participated in the annual Paddle Out ceremony along with Slater, Bruce Irons, Myles Padaca, Braden Dias and Andy Irons, among many others.
Next week, Pearl Jam will open the last show of U2's Vertigo tour at Aloha Stadium.

It sounds like a soundcheck the day before more than an authentic "intimate" show, but you've got to believe print.

Well, that's hardly my idea of a dream 15-song setlist, outside of "Can't Keep", and covers like "Crazy Mary" and "I Believe in Miracles", this is more or less the dozen Pearl Jam standards played at EVERY goddamned show.
If this is anyone's dream setlist, it's Ed's, because he most likely compiled the setlist. It isn't extraordinary, unless "Can't Keep" was played on the uke. But seriously, congratulations on your 20th performance of "Can't Keep", guys. Oh, and your 302nd performance of "DTE", and 341st rendition of "Betterman"... and we can see "Rockin'..." and "Baba" are both nearing 100.
Jesus... I don't mean to sound like gadfly or anything. But I know I do. It's just that... this thread is supposed to be about incredible 15-song sets, and the OP posts that they've played a short set and it's not really anything mind-blowing at all. It's not the worst set in the world (That would be "Yellow Ledbetter" played 15 times consecutively), it was brave to pull out of the norm in the middle of the set, but it isn't going to shake the Earth, and I don't expect this one to be up for sale or anything. This one is just for those 300 folks who were there at the event.
Seriously, this is like a "greatest hits" concert... total 180 of the vitality of the Newcastle show. Not a single song from 'No Code', and only one each from 'Binaural' and 'Riot Act', and they're both patent 'Ed' songs-- well, I'll overlook facts like "Soon Forget" was really written by Pete back in 1975 as "Blue, Red & Grey" for the time being. I'm sure that people who were there to experience this didn't feel let down, but it doesn't sound like that perfect 15 song set. This is just another detour.
My dream setlist. I wonder...will it be ever played?

1st can you read? Not the day before big gig and not even at the same venue. Soundcheck?????
I hope there's enough fans out there that this could be someone's dream. Pretty dreamy just to see such a small crowd.
I think that was the idea of this thread with the parameters(limits). Gotta love your skill at that. Sure I would love for PJ to come and play in my living room. Every song in the catolgue and even some of them twice so I'm sure to hear the different interpretations(versions). Then maybe another 20-30 covers cause they can jam any song as good as the original.

Here is Pearl Jam's set list:
"Corduroy"
"Do The Evolution"
"World Wide Suicide"
"Severed Hand"
"Even Flow"
"Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town"
"The Amerikan in Me"
"I Believe In Miracles"
"Can't Keep"
"Soon Forget"
"Crazy Mary"
"Indifference"
"Better Man"
"Baba O'Riley"
"Rockin' in the Free World"

Who said that?
