RIP Merle Haggard

My dad was in a Country Western cover band back in the day. Willie, Johnny, and of course Merle. This song was part of his set...

    Apparently he managed to pass on his birthday. That seems like a great day to bow out, to me.

    I wasn't really a fan, but I know how important he was to Country Music. Saw Garth Brooks in January so I do have a taste for country somewhere in me.

    The year of musical loss continues.

    Peace

    Just an outstanding songwriter, with a Trivial Pursuit-type tie to Pearl Jam.

    The "Momma-Son" trilogy was taped over a Merle compilation, Eddie painted over nearly everything but left "A Friend in California" visible.

    Just read about his life - and what a life! - but know little of his music. Looks like I'll be checking him out.

    Always liked that one. But I can't forget that anti-hippie anthem:

    We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
    We don't take no trips on LSD
    We don't burn no draft cards down on Main Street;
    We like livin' right, and bein' free.

    I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
    A place where even squares can have a ball
    We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
    And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

    We don't make a party out of lovin';
    We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
    We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
    Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

    And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
    A place where even squares can have a ball.
    We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
    And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.

    Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
    Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.
    Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
    And the kids here still respect the college dean.

    We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
    In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

    I'm not a country music fan but there are artists whose abilities I still appreciate, and he was definitely one of them. Great singer and songwriter. He used to tour with Kris Kristofferson in recent years and I wish I'd caught one of their shows.

    A fan on another music site said they saw him two months ago. He said he was suffering from double Pneumonia while hooked up to an oxygen tank. That's either his serious dedication towards his fans or he knew his end was coming.

    I guess "the good times are really over for good" for Merle.
    What a legend! He'll be missed!

    A (paraphrased) quote from the Hag last summer when asked by a reporter of it was getting harder being out on the road at his age. Hag said "it's getting tougher out here, but one day they'll get the roads fixed."

    Legendary.

    Pretty bummed about this one. Can't stand so-called modern country, but I grew up on classic stuff like Cash, Willie, George Jones, Waylon, and Merle. Sad :cry:

    Yeah, I'd no idea of his musical associations until reading the article of his death. Huge Highwaymen fan here.

    Merle was amazing. My wife told me about it earlier today and I instantly felt punched. I think I cussed. Bad news at the end of a long, bad day. Must make it better by listing to some favorites.

    R.I.P. Merle.

    “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
    Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.
