    If there is such a thing . . .

My favorite though is Rebel Rebel.

I bet 9/10 people would say Space Oddity or "Ground Control to Major Tom".

Personally I'd say Life On Mars.

Just getting deeper into Bowie and reallu been digging Ziggy and Hunky Dory. Aladdin Sane is on its way.

Prob won't get a lot of votes and choosing one quintessential song is like picking your favourite child but I really love Golden Years. Honourable mentions to Heroes, Starman, Changes, Jean Genie, Rebel Rebel.

I'm cheating a bit because staying true to the meaning of quintessential I think I would have to go with Ziggy but within the limits of my own auditory perceptions I'd go with "Teenage Wildlife". Angst, artistic frustrations, soaring emotions, classic Bowieque melody, hints of paranoia, and added to that some of the most intense Frippertronics ever-- remarkable!

I think "Changes" is a great example of a Bowie song....slow build-up, nice melody, catchy chorus, nice saxophone.

"And these children that you spit on..."

It's the quintessential Bowie tune. Not my favourite by far (Panic in Detroit), but I'd tip my hat toward that song as one that drew me in. It had the allure that 'Panic' didn't for an outsider of the Bowie experience.
