    Before i answer I need to know first if this is related to music, like some band that maybe should call it a day, or from the point of view of someone contemplating suicide.

    That's how I understood it. To me "burning out" doesn't imply making a conscientious decision to call it quits.

    It's better to rust and fade away with dignity....obviously applys to the Neil young song hey hey my my, I read he meant burn out as in bursts then burn out again, not self destruct to a point of no return. Unfortunately forever immortalised in Kurt cobains suicide note...sad he couldn't see a future with a slow burn out...it's better to rust....
