Man Dies As Storms Lash German Festival
June 22, 2007, 6:10 PM ET
Wolfgang Spahr, Hamburg
Severe storms have left one man dead and another seriously injured at Germany's Southside Festival.
The man, a 28-year-old medic, died yesterday (June 21) when his vehicle was struck by a tent pole flung into the air by a storm at the festival site on a military airfield in Neuhausen ob Eck, southern Germany. His 30-year-old colleague was severely injured in the incident.
Winds in excess of 120 kilometers per hour had swept over the grounds and destroyed tents erected for the concert, due to be held June 22-24.
Organizers FKP Scorpio Konzertproduktion from Hamburg announced that the festival would still go ahead with some alterations to the bill. "We can't just send 45,000 people on their way to a festival back home again," said Bernd Zerbin, the organizers' spokesman.
The rock festival is being held in Neuhausen for the eighth time with acts scheduled to appear including Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Marilyn Manson and Placebo. Organizers are planning a gesture of sympathy for the relatives of the fatally injured medic over the course of the festival.
The storm on Thursday also put a stop to Barbra Streisand's concert in Schloss Schonbrunn in Vienna after wind damaged the stage. The concert will now take place tonight.

No reason for them not to play festivals. These are freak accidents of nature, nothing to do with crowd control (or lack thereof). At this festival, if I recall, the storm struck as things were being set up. The person who died was someone who was working there. Not a fan, but no less tragic.0
