Sony/Epic owns publishing rights and original recordings for all material published while under contract with them. The band owns publishing rights and original recordings for all material published after parting ways with Sony/Epic. UMG will facilitate marketing of all the material whenever it is licensed, whether it's a commercial/movie/advertisement/etc.WhatYouTaughtMe said:Ok, can someone with a good understanding of this explain it like I'm five? Doesn't Sony own publishing rights to their older stuff? If not, what's the difference between publishing rights and the rights that Sony has?

This article makes it sound like UMPG has taken over the publishing rights to the Sony songs as well (not recordings) when they mention "most well-known and popular songs"0

Keep telling yourself that.Tim Simmons said:Guys. Music publishing has nothing to do with control of the catalog. It has to do with the songwriting and management of rights.
PJ still decides if reissues are coming, not universal (and I'm pretty sure the recordings are still through SONy - through RVM). If songs are wanted for commercials movies or whatever, they go through UMPG not Sony ATV. PJ still has approval. This is probably just back end business stuff about % of songwriting royalties and whatever.I know PJ has decided for the past 2-3 albums what to use in movies/TV etc... (Greys Anatomy, Castle, 50/50, MLB, Sons of Anarchy, etc etc) I Just think in addition to a massive company holding rights, there will now be more use.

So maybe when Mike and Kelly mentioned something being in the works for PJ25, they were referring to a string of vinyl reissues as a way to commemorate the event, and not a PJ20 style festival.0

More useless information !jesus greets me looks just like me ....0

This only refers to the way publishing royalties are paid.
PJ would have to have the rights to their original master recordings revert back to them in order to have full control of reissues. it's unlikely that they put this in the contract when they signed in 1990. it is mostly an incentive given to established artists to resign with the record label. but I haven't seen anything about this from a legal aspect ever mentioned with PJ.livefootsteps.org/user/?usr=446

UMPG is fully committed to the exploitation and licensing of each and every song in our extensive catalog. To successfully master this task, we employ talented individuals with a genuine passion for songs and a spirit of enterprise. The level of client service you can expect from UMPG is quite simply unparalleled.
They hired a machine. Whether that means more commercialization of the music remains to be seen.0 -
is commercialization of music even a big deal in 2016? You gotta do something to stand out.

Have you seen the new Pepsi Alive commercial? Or how about the Coke Evenflow one?0
-
I mean, don't people fast forward through commercials in 2016?
* assuming PJ OKs for a songs use in a commercial, which I don't really see them doing, not that there is anything wrong with it anymore.

Does this maybe mean the remaining 2006 bootlegs will be made available, lol?"The world is full of idiots and I am but one of them."

So Epic/Sony would still be the ones releasing the pre-backspacer catalog, Pearl Jam still owns their catalog from Backspacer to now, but Universal simply handles the royalties?
I can't see Sony selling the music rights to that catalog. I don't recall anyone doing that since Michael Jackson ended up with the Beatles catalog.. lol0 -
Are they laying the groundwork for retiring after... say PJ30?0

Very interesting. I have a very slim chance of getting to anything after Wrigley so something like this or a new box set would be fine with meSpoonman110 said:So maybe when Mike and Kelly mentioned something being in the works for PJ25, they were referring to a string of vinyl reissues as a way to commemorate the event, and not a PJ20 style festival.

TMR's records are pressed at United Record Pressing - the exact same plant that pressed Lightning Bolt. Just fyi.Sarava said:It's to bad they didn't sign with Third Man Records. Jack White could have done some great things with vinyl re-issues.
