I went back and forth on it when they came out. Eventually decided to get a signature edition one (Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam had been sold out) figuring I could flip it to try and recover some of the cost if it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It's still my daily music player for the car and at work, sometimes around the house as well since my digital library exceeds my vinyl collection. I read a bunch of articles on why it was a waste or you shouldn't be able to notice the difference but you do. I still love mine. 7digital, qobuz, hdtracks, prostudiomasters are all decent sites to get music from and I've even gotten into vinyl rips (some for hard to acquire records and some that I've ripped myself for the road and office).
    I am wired and fading...

Where I'm at now, is that it's getting more and more annoying to carry around two devices (phone and portable music player).   There are now options to have high quality from smart phones.  LG puts a high quality DAC in most of their phones now.   You can also buy an external DAC to use in any phone to get better audio.  Was thinking of buying one of these:

I just remember the cost of downloading albums from the PONO store was outrageously expensive ... especially considering I already owned most everything I wanted in CD format which is about as good as your ears can detect.  Made the bad ol' days of $18.99 CD's from Sam Goody seem like a great deal if I recall correctly.

That's why I switched to an LG V20 a few years back. It's a good phone with a superb DAC. I did a 3 month trial with Tidal and it was pretty glorious. One of the few times I have been able to notice a difference with audio streaming. Looking to upgrade soon to the V40, but I've read mixed reviews on the phone itself.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Yah.  The thing is, I think it's a device with a high quality DAC that makes all the difference in the world.  I think a high quality DAC makes more of a difference between CD quality audio and high res audio.    For portable use I never bother with high resolution files, but it's night and day when your using a cheap vs. quality DAC on standard CD quality flac.
