having observed the message pit over the last month there has been a lot of debate about who had the best crowd, loudest, energy, singalongs etc. why is this important? just being at the concert is enough surely?

the 2006 europe crowds blew everyone away hence the reason the band couldn't wait to get back in '07. but we don't have this same hang up about who was best.

enjoy the experience, people!

If you don't have the same hang up about who is the best, then why are you posting this? Judging by the list of shows you have been to, you have never even been to an American show!

I think it's the endless debate. It seems to me that American participate in shows a little differently than European crowds, so maybe we're not comparing apples to apples here. Maybe American crowds are more reserved or harder to please so getting a reaction like @ MSG makes it that much more special for the band. Who knows. It's fun to debate, but like you said in your initial post it's all about enjoying the show so to me it doesn't matter what the rest of the crowd is doing.
I smile, but who am I kidding...

I think because European shows are usually GA on the floor, that they look more 'wild' - you're all squashed in that space and you have to go crazy with everyone or you'll go under! :o

But after going to MSG although it looks calmer cos you've got your individual seat spaces - listening to the whole room singing their hearts out on both nights its pretty clear that the US fans are just as enthusiastic as the Euro crowds :)

not all people in US shows are american and not everyone in Europe shows are european .. :D

but yeah... I sang my lungs out every fuckin night (concert night ;) ) in USA last month.

shit i love the US crowds, European ones seem to be more involved, but how can anyone not think that the South American crowds are not the craziest?
Have you seen the Buenos Aires crowd on You Tube?

    Right

I think European crowds are the craziest becuase of GA. LIke you can do whatever you want.. and when you jump your jumping with people and stuff like that.

But in USA you are at a fixed seat. I had no room for pretty much all of my shows to do my thing... the crowds are both equally vocal just dont move as much as they probably arn't as familiar with the GA setting we have in Europe.

There is a big reason why the U.S. doesn't have GA. It all goes back to Dec. '79 when 11 fans were crushed to death at a GA Who concert in Cincinnati. Since then a lot of cities have banned GA concerts in indoor venues.

i think that had an effect but it was nearly 30 years ago and things are a lot different...

we've had bad accidents over here in europe also, but better organisation, pit barriers, padding, etc can help all of that...

so whilst i understand 11 people died, it was nearly 30 years ago and surely lessons have been learned from it?

anyway, i prefer GA but then thats because if there are 8 idiots standing around next to me i can move... unlike when i was at my last seated concert and the 2 folk in front of me were so annoying i wanted to rip out their lungs and then nail aforementioned lung to their face.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

The main reason is that we europeans had to wait 6 years to see Pearl Jam and for a lot of us it was our first PJ tour. Pearl Jam tour the US every tour so people in europe just anticipated and relished in it more thats all. If they toured europe every tour i'm sure it would diminish a little.

That's the reason I always figured too. Like those crowds in South America....I'm pretty confident that only a small percentage of those people saw Pearl Jam before 2005, that had to play a factor in their craziness. Whereas someone like me, living in Pennsylvania, saw them within an hour and a half of my house at least once each year from 2003-2006 alone... It's still exciting each time, but it'd be different if it was only once every 5 years or so...

Of course the europe corwds are going to be better. The US crowds are spoiled. For every 10 shows they play here, they probably only play about 3 there.

I think the answer to the original question is pretty simple... it has been proven time and time again with the BAND... they respond to the crowd... each night is a different show and a different crowd and a different direction... the crowd has the power to take over and dictate a show to a certain extent with their level of enthusiasm... I LOVE THIS ABOUT PEARL JAM... they arent bigger than the 20,000 people there to see them and they know that... PHILLY BOSTON MSG... best crowds in the US FOR PEARL JAM in my opinion... and not a coincidence would be that each tour... these 3 citys get usually as a rule the best and longest shows in alot of cases ( this year that held true again other than boston cause of the fricken curfew at this place)

A SHITTY CROWD does not get CROWN OF THORNS or SMILE or a 31 song set...

I Agree for the most part... but in 06 at Boston 1 Ed noted that Boston compared to South America ( minus the chants in between songs) and MSG is close also.

But overall the European and South American crowds are better than USA or Australia

I wonder who has the best sports fans, who has better crowds at the opera, Oh I know who has the best fans that start fights at football (soccer) games, I think Europe would win that one hands down.

Who has the best Amy Winehouse or Britney Spears fans, I know for sure Europe has the best David Hasselhoff fans, he's VERY poplular over there.

Agreed, but a lot of cities still have GA; including NY, so that does not totally explain why not.

Don't judge a concert by its boot. There are a number of shows where the boots don't do justice to how into it the crowd was.

Also, when pearl jam shows were GA in the U.S. before 2000, people went just as crazy. Not necessarily as much sing along but you could feel the same energy.
