Had the chance to visit Japan in december and was amazed at how beautiful of a country it was, and I may have a chance to go again in the next few years.

What were the 2003 shows like in terms of crowds and popularity over there? I wasnt into the band at that time so have no idea, and do you think there is any chance they would ever go back there?

the 2003 shows sold extremely poor.
sendai: The upper level was completely empty and there is a very small crowd (between 800-1,000)
    osaka: 2400
budokan: tokyo , japan 8000 people (holds 14000)

imagine seeing pj with only 800 people?!
if you listen to the boots it's like they are playing a soundcheck the entire time because the audience is super quiet.

I have also heard that the crowds were about as bad as they get. Dead silent. Someone once commented that the boots sound like they were playing in the studio because there was zero crowd noise, lol.

How many were at the Borgata shows? I was at the first one, and seem to remember like, 1500 people?? Could be way off, but was curious....

I saw them in Osaka in 1995 and 2003.
The crowd was crazier in 1995 as far as I remember. Now in Japan American rock is not as popular as back in 80s to early 00s. It seems like no one in Japan knows PJ. I hope I can see them in my country, but it is highly unlikely......

A friend of mine went to see Radiohead and The Strokes in Japan (2002ish). When she described how the crowd reacted she said, 'They go absolutely crazy during the song, jumping around and screaming but when the song ends they go dead silent until the next song starts and they resume jumping around and screaming.' Maybe this explains the silence on those boots? No idea, but when people have mentioned those boots and the lack of crowd noise this always comes to mind.

I think your friend is right. But I don't think dead silent. For people like from America or Europe it may seem so, though. And people over there generally tend to "concentrate" on music than making noise and having chats with friends, IMO.
