Sheds vs. Arenas - More drunk driving?

I am, of course, stoked for any PJ show, but I am kinda bummed that the 3 I'm going to are all in sheds for various reasons. One of them is the drunkenness and subsequent drunk driving. A lot of people on the porch have been complaining about drunken behavior at shows- do you think that more people are more hammered at outdoor shows? I do, basically because of the tailgating, and the "all day" vibe. If you go to like MSG or boston garden, sure people are drinking in the bar before the show and whatnot, but I don't believe it's the same level of throwing back a keg kinda thing...plus, after an outdoor show, everyone goes back to their cars, sits in traffic, and the drinking continues. Since a lot of the outdoor venues (at least the ones I've been to) are kinda out in the boonies, these people also have no choice but to drive home. I don't know, it makes me wee bit uneasy. Just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were.

I've been to many, many shows at the mansfield venue, since I was in high school, and I know that the drinking aspect of it is HUGE. bigger than at indoor shows. people think "ah summer day, have some beers in the sun..." kinda thing. It just has that vibe. I know people who have gone to pearl jam shows and been more excited about the tailgating than the actual show!

  • I'd be inclined to agree with you. Most arenas (from MSG by you to the Rose Garden by me) are also near public transporation and I can speak from experience that there are usually a ton of drunks that take it after shows. Its unfortunate that people don't have the foresight to seek a designated driver in those kinds of situations.

I guess they figure they can sober up with the 3 hours it takes to get out of Great Woods.

I do enjoy being outside more during summer show than inside but I think you get meatballs anywhere. The downfall is more drunk drivers because of the lack of public transit.

In all honesty, I find PJ shows pretty tame compared to some of the other show I've been too. Everyone want to hear the music instead of something like Jimmy Buffet where you get a bunch of middle aged morons trying to drink themselves into a coma before the show.

    I could never understand that.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

Speaking for myself I concur 100% that there is more consumption going down at Great Woods/Tweeter than at the Garden. It is a more festive experience in the parking lot with the Frizbees, Footballs, hackysacks and Beerballs than North Station. Also it is more economical, a keg or 30 pack in the parking lot is a whole lot better than the $5 beers at the Fours and the $7 drinks at the Venue.

I ususally refrain from drinking after the show and chill out, we will fire up the grill and eat. For me that works and provides time to sober up while waiting for the traffic to subside.

Definitely more drinking going on for the outdoor shows. I've arranged drop off and pickup for the Mansfield shows!
