Tailgating

OK, we're new to this whole tailgating thing and I have a few questions so hopefully someone would be kind of enough to answer :)

Mansfield and Hartford

1--I know you can tailgate at Mansfield (we saw quite a few in the VIP lot at REM's show last week) but are there rules about what you can and can't bring in? We're thinking of bringing our very small gas grill, it's the size of a hibachi but it uses propane not charcoal and I don't want to starve if we plan on using it but find out we can't once we get there.

2--Does anyone know what time the lots open? I'm assuming at or around 2 seeing that's when you can pick up your tickets. I don't see us being there before then but just in case.

3--There were definitely people in the Mansfield lots with booze but I'm assuming you're really not supposed to be drinking in the lots but how is the security there about enforcing this?

4--I know you can't tailgate in the Hartford parking lots but I read that people have partied in other lots nearby in the past. Does anyone know how the Motel 6 is about grilling/drinking in their parking lot? Note: I know the Motel 6 is gross and potentially dangerous but I'm in a posse so I'm all set ;)

Thanks in advance :)

  • I can answer your Mansfield questions. Been to tons of shows there. Tom Petty being the most recent (last Saturday).

Pretty much any types of grills are ok. From your description, you will have no problem. I've used both propane and charcoal in he past.

According to Live Nation, gates open at 2:30 for both Mansfield shows.

As far as the booze, the cops are cool as long as everyone is 21. I would put your beverage in a solo cup though.

    See ya at the shows!

  • Im not sure about Mansfield or hartford, But at most Tailgating events Alcohol is prohibited, but cops are cool about it and its not really enforced as long as your not being a sloppy ass, under 21, or drinking out of an open container. so remember to bring your plastic cups.

i have been to plenty of tailgates in Philly, and some of the grills i have seen in the lots are just way too extreme, so i wouldnt see a problem with yours.

Thanks :) We're definitely over 21 (although I know I'll get asked if a cop does walk by, I always do and they're always shocked :)) and our grill is not even close to extreme, it's about 1 ft wide by 1 1/2 feet long at most so it looks like we're all set.

For Mansfield- make sure your drinks are in opaque cups, like red or blue. Also I heard that they weren't opening the lots until late- like 4.

Where did you hear that about Hartford & no tailgaiting? I've always tailgated at Hartford, if you park in the old Jai Alai parking lot, anything goes, open containers, anything you want. (Literally)

i'm staying at the 6, and you can party there. i stayed there in '06, and there were coolers and grills a plenty. and it was all pj fans, no crackhookers. (although if you have a small knife you can tape to your leg, it may not be a bad idea.. just in case.)

I've already got the cups packed and ready :)

I thought I read that you couldn't tailgate in the Dodge Music Center lots, which we wouldn't be doing anyway seeing we're staying at the 6. I definitely could be wrong though, I've never actually been there. But it sounds like it's a party pretty much every where else around there.

Good, we were debating about bringing the grill if we were only going to use it at Mansfield I (no partying for us in the lots at Mansfield II as we're bringing our son to that one :D), but if we can use it at the 6 too I think we will bring it to save a little $ on food.

And you joke about the knife but I was actually seriously contemplating it based on what I've been reading.

Thank you both for the info :)

mansfield is definitely fine w/ the alcohol, as long as you are discreet. We recently brought a bottle of white wine for the ladies and forgot a corkscrew and asked the cops where to get one!

Plastic cups, making no scene, and cleaning up after yourself are the 3 ingredients to not getting hassled.

Dont park at Great Woods (mansfield)cops are dicks and traffic blows. Park in a pay lot before you go into the great woods lot. The pay lots are $20 and you can do whatever you want. Smoke drink grill anything and its a hell of alot easier to get home.

But we're parking in the VIP lot (no we don't have VIP tix...at least not for Mansfield I :D). We saw people tailgating there last Friday but the REM crowd seemed a lot more subdued than PJ crowds. Do you think they're just jerks for certain crowds that they expect problems with?

Yes- and may we all remember that the last time PJ played Mansfield they were effectively kicked out of town for 5 years.

vip isnt bad but its $40 atleast and you still have to deal with cops. Pay lots before GW is only $20

Well that has me a little worried. It'll just be the two of us with our little tiny grill and little tiny car drinking a few and grilling a couple of burgers. Do you guys think they'll harrass people incessantly for no reason just because of the last time or do you think they'll just target the larger/more rowdy groups? We're a thirtysomething married couple, it's not like we're bringing a group of 20-30 teens/twentysomethings in an RV and drinking from noon till showtime cranking the music getting drunk, loud and obnoxious. Not that there's anything wrong with that (other than the obnoxious part) it's just not us.

We figured we'd get there around 4 pick up our tickets, go back to the lot set up the grill, cook, have a few beers then go in around 7:30-7:45. I wasn't planning a big shindig but based on that comment it sounds like they're going to crackdown for these two shows.

I suppose we don't need to hang out in the lot but I like to have a couple/few before the show and figured we could save some money by bringing our own food. $8 a beer + the cost of the food can add up real fast over the course of 3 shows :(

Yeah, we already bought the parking pass seeing I wanted to get out of the lot as quickly as possible. After our Camden experience in 06 (1 1/2 hours in the parking garage with a splitting headache, starving and having to pee) I did NOT want to get stuck in anything like that ever again.
