Greenville to Hampton: Day off suggestions?

My friend and I are driving to Hampton from Greenville. Just looking for some suggestions of things to see along the way. Not familiar with the area, so we're wondering if we should just drive straight to Hampton on Sunday, or stay somewhere in between for a night. We have all day Sunday and most of the day Monday to check things out, so any suggestions of cool things to do would be great. Thanks!

I used to live there back in the late 80's / early 90's,
but haven't been back since I moved to Seattle in 1994.
