I remember reading that article at the time.Ed got a hard time for it.There was a real media P.J back lash after Kurts death. At times Ed's mouth didnt help him either. The statement that he thought he would go before Kurt seemed to really wind people up.
Kurt always had that "here for the meantime not the longtime look" but Ed's always looked like a survivor.

  • i still have that MM.
One of the very few artifacts i didn't rip to shreds in a fit of teenage rage.

    Bye bye 10c newsletters.
    :(

This is the one with the "The End of Pearl Jam?" on the cover, yes?

edit: actualy i don't think this is the same. it may have come out a month later or so. the one i have, there is a quote to the effect of, "this could be our last show, for all i know" in it.
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

Reading this and remembering the "old" Eddie just breaks my heart. He was in so much pain emotionally. It's really a miracle that he came through all of that in one piece. He seems so much more grounded now, able to find humor in little things, and accepting of the role he has to play in the public eye. It makes me so grateful that we still have him.

This article should be required reading for all new PJ fans. The sentiments contained herein inform much of ed's early writing ...

want to know the feelings behind conduroy ... not for you ... last exit ... immortality ... blood?

    It's all in here.

Thank you for this link. It gave me chills and made me teary-eyed. I went to Seattle back in 2006 (same weekend as the Gorge show) and I visited Viretta Park - where the park benches are a memorial to Kurt. It was a very emotional experience. I now have even more appreciation for Ed and the guys - for continuing to play after Kurt's death. The 4/10/1994 Boston Garden show will forever be in my memory.

Thanks for posting! Great read! It's actually the first interview I've read with Eddie where he really talks about his feeling towards Kurt and their relationship and his suicide. Must have been extremely hard for Ed to realize how much they had in common and then learning about the suicide. And then having that headline "WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN EDDIE VEDDER?" smacked in his face by that crazy, drugwrecked b**** Courtney Love!
Allthough I have never perceived Eddie as being suicidal - at least not as much as Kurt - it's incredible that he made it through this ordeal and came out on the other side in a better, brighter place. Good for him and good for us!
Also the parts about his/their sudden fame and being the spokesperson of an entire generation was great. Seems like the hole not-doing-videos-or interviews was the right choice, even though it didn't have the effect it was supposed to have.

I know that I "painted Ed big" and felt like I could relate to him and his strugles. In fact I was just a teenager like everybody else with a troublefree childhood and I had absolutely no idea of the pain and suffering that he, Kurt and others had been through.

WOW, that article really made me think. It should be required reading for all fans.
    End of rant......

    Thanks for posting.

I don't know that I could have been a fan at that time. It's a little too much drama for me :)
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
  • agreed that this should be required reading for PJ fans, particularly younger ones who've come to the band in the last 10 years.

every time Nirvana or Kurt is mentioned is the forum, some jackass jumps in and says "heroin addict", "blow your head off", "fuck Kurt, fuck Nirvana, Nirvana sucks" etc. imagine being in a conversation with Ed and saying that, then imagine Ed's reaction. this piece is far from the only thing he's said about Nirvana either. "That's just our favorite band is all," he says after they play that snippet of Teen Spirit on New Year's Eve when they're OPENING for Nirvana and the Chili Peppers. Ed has said more than once that PJ wouldn't even exist without Nirvana.

so again, to you assholes who slag Nirvana here, once and for all: fuck...you. This board is created and supported by Pearl Jam, and Pearl Jam loves Nirvana. that's your context. if you didn't live through that time and understand the context, then learn it before you start spouting your mouth off like an idiot teenager.

That's such a meaty article and kind of hard to read so many years later.

But cheers to Jones and Vedder for going there with each other. Revealing for Jones, cathartic for Vedder at best.

Its so weird reading that kind of stuff so after the fact :P

Ive read bits and parts from that interview over the years but never the whole thing like that. The interviewer must have almost pissed his pants a couple of times. Can you imagine trying to interview someone, and they send a chair flying across the room? The article was horribly written but nice to know how ed viewed things at the time. It does kind of make you feel like an asshole for buying records and posting on the pit though :P

It's so easy to forget how fucked up it was back than for everyone.
I remember reading this article standing in some store all fucked up. I felt so much despair, dealing with Kurts death and then reading how Eddie felt like this was it, fuck it all.
Pj was so improtant to me back than as i was going through so much shit and needed to find hope somewhere.

If Pj would of broke up or something happened to Ed i don't know how i would of dealt with it. As a teenager you think everything sucks and that this is the end. looking back i know i would of got through it but i'm very greatful that PJ were able to pull back and live their lives.
There is no doubt that if they didn't step out of the spotlight they would of imploded years ago
