I agree with both of you in many ways, but that big picture focus is what causes most people to slide slowly out of shape and into obesity.
In all areas of life, you don't balance your focus between the general and specific you will not achieve your goals.

Yes, I agree, which is why my form of exercise works so well for me; I love walking/hiking, so it being a driving passion helps. It
Also fits in quite well with my other passion, training dogs. That is another key that I find to be essential to long term fitness, is finding something that you love to do, that challenges you physically.
Exactly, Tree. If you don't find enjoyment in your exercise I think you're doing the wrong form of exercise. And ideally, you find one for which you have a passion and which makes you feel great.

I bought myself a good quality yoga mat today, the difference between a cheap mat and a pricey one is noticeable.

A question, I burn around 800 calories per gym session, is that good?

How long is a piece of string?

I'm not sure your question gets you very far.

For one thing, unless you're undergoing complicated monitoring in a physiology lab, you really don't know how many calories you are burning. Fitbits and treadmills and such do a crude estimate.

Secondly, what are your actual goals? I don't think burning calories is your real goal. You've mentioned better mental health and that's a great one. Maybe other goals are losing weight, improving strength and endurance for some other activity you like, training for another goal like running a marathon, building a really buff body that will make potential romantic partners swoon, or just having fun and feeling good. All of those are more important areas to focus on than fussing about calories. Counting calories is a joyless trap, in my opinion (rgambs will disagree).
My goal was to lose the weight I gained over the course of last year.
The previous year to that I lost weight and put it on due to always being idle doing homework and eating the wrong foods.

Freaking old ladies at the gym who apparently bathe in VATS of cheap-ass perfume.
    :perturbed:

I got on a treadmill 3 down from a pair of golden girls because I don't like running under the fan. It was ok, I could breathe just well enough.
Then the rest of the squad showed up and I felt like I was going to pass out.
I jumped off the treadmill, I said "too much perfume, people are trying to breathe here" and went to run under the fan about 30 feet away. They were giving me mad hairy scary eyeballs, that was ok, but I was still catching wafts, and I can still taste that shit in the back of my throat now 5 hours later.

    Was I a dick?
    Yes.
    Am I sorry?
    No.

Were you a jerk? yes. But you were an honest one. My
Mother used to wear Youth Dew.. ugh.. shudder. One day, after smoking a huge joint, the landlord called to say he was coming by to fix something.. so my sister sprayed like five pumps of it, to "cover" the pot smell.. we couldn't go back in for like 6 hrs!! It was horrible!!

Five years when I turned 40 i declared that "I'm in the worse shape in my life".
Since then I have done nothing to rectify the situation.
So my question is am I still in the worse shape of my life or since i did nothing even worse off then i was five years ago.

20 minutes on the rowing machine, a little running to figure out my good talking pace, and some weights. I think the rowing machine may be a game changer. What I did with the weights was smoother, and I think it was a better warm up compared to the stationary bicycle.

I have to say that if I find myself in a conventional gym the only machine I can stand is the rowing machine. I kind of like it, actually.

I've been flatlined on my weight, so I was annoyed at that, but I am now thinking it's because I am offsetting fat loss with muscle gain. My pants seem to be getting looser still so hopefully I am right. I didn't think it was possible to put on muscle that quickly, but I'm reading some articles that say you can put on almost a half pound of muscle a week in the early stages of rigorous weight training.

Here's how I lost 51 lbs in 6 months and kept it off so far.
Almost entirely due to completely changing my eating habits, The problem was I love food and I love to eat. I had to find food that was still good to eat, but was able to eat a lot.
What worked for me was finding soup recipes that were good, overload them with vegetables and I can go back for seconds or even thirds. Chicken broth is very low calories, and as long as you make your own or use low sodium if makes a very healthy and delicious meal. Be sure to use low sodium, or you can get an entire day's worth of salt in 1 sitting. I've found that something as simple as filling a pot to the top with vegetables (cauliflower, squash, carrots, anything really) taste good if they simmer for 2-3 hours in broth and add some unique seasonings. We have a local seasoning store that I've tried a variety of seasonings to keep if different.
I also learned to love salad. Same idea, overload a salad with a bunch of fresh veggies and I would eat my salad out of a serving bowl because I could still eat as much as I wanted. The only key was a good dressing. Most dressing is very high in calories, so find a low cal dressing (most lowfat or even nonfat dressings have a lot of calories, so find ones with low sugar as well).
Obviously you cant eat just soup or salad.
I was able to do it for about 2 months and lost about 25 lbs. I lost the other 25 lbs in 4 months just by making sure I had 1 meal a day that was a soup or salad overloaded with veggies, and just not over eating the other meals.
My goal was 50 lbs, but made it to 51. Once I lost the 51 lbs, I was able to relax a little more, I was eating to keep the weight off instead of eating to lose weight. That meant I could occasionally go back for seconds or enjoy some dessert. And I realize if I take a day off of eating right it takes 1-2 days of being careful to make up for it. if I go crazy 1 day like at a superbowl party and just eat nothing but nachos and wings and beer for half a day, that will take 4-5 days to "undo."
I also started exercising about 3 times a week as well. But I believe my eating habit was the biggest factor.
What allowed me to do it was motivation. My motivation was a bet I had with my dad. it began last year, I had 6 months to lose 50 lbs, and then I had to keep it off the rest of the year. I won the bet and bought a new Dual turntable, receiver and Klipsh speakers with it (well, not new, all vintage, but new to me)
Now my motivation has been how much better I feel just being healthy, I do not want to gain 51 lbs back!
