Difference between communism and socialism

  • I recommend investing (capitalism) in copy of Marx's Communist Manifestoto answer your question, or go to the public library to check one out (socialism). None of the above answers accurately depict what Marx envisioned in his theory, nor has there ever been a communist system on this planet to date. In a truly Marxist system, there is no government. None of the governments we fought in the Cold War were communist governments -- the USSR itself was a socialist republic (government owned the means of production). In a purely communist system, there is no such thing as ownership at all, whether it's by the government or by individuals. In theory, people work, they freely share the results of their labor, and people only take what they need. Reading The Communist Manifestochanged the way I think about a lot of things people have lied to me about. It's also short and easy to read. You can get through it in a day.

I pulled this book off the shelf at my local bookstore, I considered buying it but didn't want to be seen as a communist (my parents hate it and other migrants fled it).

Great answer. Ignorance or misunderstand at best of what communism and socialism (and how that differs from Democratic Socialism) are rife in America. Philosophy and poli sci are dead in our schools.
    First, Hey! :nuh_uh:
Second, did you know they teach philosophy in HIGH SCHOOL in at least one European country ? When my friend told me she had to take it as a teenager and hated it my head nearly exploded.
Here in America there is only one thing the average high school student knows about philosophy which is that way back when there was this dude names Sew Crates.
Dude the only reason anyone in my school did is cuz it was near a Greek neighborhood lol

Not sure where you mean but guessing a Greek tavern in NYC? A buddy took me to a Greek tavern in SF when I was just 21 and told me ouzo was like licorice candy and would not get me drunk. After several shots he told me we should get up and Greek dance with the regulars. Ohhh, that sidewalk pavement was hard and cold!

Did they / do they teach different ideologies in american schools? In Canada, we learned about all the major political ideologies....in jr high, I think? I remember being surprised that communism sounded, to me, in theory, like the best of them...For some reason, I would not be surprised to learn that this isn't on the curriculum in many states...Never had philosophy classes either, tho.

We were taught various political ideologies but I don't think most US schools do.
